seafarers' work
Opis:
This paper presents findings from three workshops focused on the physical, organizational and social work environment of service crew working on board Swedish passenger vessels. The first workshop aimed to identify underlying causes of long-term sick leave among employees in the service department, and potential measures that can be taken to reduce ill-health. The second and third workshop explored knowledge of available methods to identify occupational safety and health risks, and suggest health-promotion strategies at individual, team and company levels. A total of 58 persons from the Swedish maritime cluster participated in the workshops. During the workshops, open and structured brainstorming was used to create affinity diagrams to systematically summarize the identified causes, risks and strategies. Although the results presented in this article stem from a research project focused on Swedish passenger vessels, many of the findings may be transferable to an international maritime setting towards a deeper understanding of seafarers’ work environment and working conditions.

Opis:
The paper’s goal is to attempt to show what narrative Swedish museums conduct on spoils of war and trophies which are in their collections, how this strategy was worked out, and how to understand the responsibility versus the visitor watching such objects. Materials from a symposium and a conference held in Stockholm in 2008 have been analysed, and so have current texts (labels, curatorial texts, entries in online catalogues). Swedish museum curators have considered their responsibility to be proper preservation, studying, conserving, displaying those objects, making them available to the public (exhibitions, online bases), thus the basic museum activity has turned into a synonym of modern responsibility. The key activity which enabled the working out of this joint policy is to be found in detailed provenance studies.

The events in Ukraine, the annexation of Crimea, and the Russian attitude towards Ukraine show an evident change in European relations. The escalation of conflict between Russia and Ukraine however does not affect only those two countries, but also those in the nearest vicinity. Especially in Scandinavian and Nordic countries change in social ambience can be observed. The aim of this article is essentially to analyze Swedish reaction to the Ukrainian Crisis, the change in Swedish attitude towards international security systems, especially NATO, and Swedish perception of its national safety.

In his article the author presented the main directions of Polish-Swedish contacts in terms of adult education since the end of World War II to the decline of People's Republic of Poland in 1989. The entire publication was prepared basing on research in the archives and libraries on both sides of the Baltic. Special attention was paid to two issues: (1) development of educational offer for Polish people living in Sweden - inter alia, an educational complex in transition camp in Öreryd and educational concepts for solidarity emigration of the 1980s and (2) cooperation of the communities of Swedish and People's Republic of Poland's adult education - in particular the activities of Polish Committee in the 1960s, the involvement of Polish Club in the 1970s, the cooperation of the Council of Folk High Schools functioning within the Union of Socialist Polish Youth (ZSMP) with Swedish Union of Folk High School Teachers (SFHL) as well as common projects of 'Solidarity' Trade Union (NSZZ Solidarnosc) and the Swedish Workers' Education Association (ABF) of the 1980s. The paper also draws the readers' attention to certain exceptional character of the cooperation of Swedish adult education communities with Polish entities as compared with their relations with other countries. The author passed many judgements and drew a number of conclusions in summing up both the joint activities undertaken by institutions of culture and education for the adults of the Kingdom of Sweden and People's Republic of Poland as well as their short- and long-term effects.

Then he analyzes films of Ingmar Bergman and Vilgot Sjoman and writes that both directors criticize official institutions which should take care of young people but they do not do it any more. Then he analyzes a few films of Lukas Moodysson. He also notices, that it is used children’s heroes in modern swedish movies for social criticism and directors portray them in completely exceptional manner. Very often directors uses also image of immigrant or image of other to show swedish society from outside, what gives completely new and exceptional image.

The article puts together and describes four main traditions of the Swedish perception of the Polish, which have been formed through the centuries by the conflicts and encounters, as well as similarities and differences in the development of societies in these two countries. The historically qualified notions about the Polish as courageous warriors, innocent martyrs, anarchy rioters and catholic fanatics reappear also in Swedish press articles that were published after 1989, sometimes gaining a new meaning. These notions should be interpreted in the background of national narratives of the Swedes since images of the others are being often used while defining one’s own group and consequently they shouldbe seen as a substantial constituent of national identity.

Opis:
This essay concerns the constant meter on Thomas Börje Forsberg’s (Bathory, Quorthon) albums of introductions and outroductions (“intros” and “outros”), placed at the beginning and end of albums or performances of songs. Introductions and outroductions refer to the imagination of the transducer. Together with the album cover and lyrics, they create a kind of imaginary illustration; a kind of soundscape that cannot be heard only by auditory perception, focused on the melodic and rhythmic course. It heals, directs, specifically defines this perception, and equips to determine the importance of using association scores. External sounds are instrumentalized; the sounds are clothed with additional semantic content. Introductions and outroductions determine the composition of the albums, fulfilling in them the scheme of a bracket or structural frame, which can, for example, be associated (especially in the first three albums by Bathory) with an attempt to imitate the course of religious conduct – a ritual order with its specific determination of application and closure. The introduction, therefore, is the task of the listener in the atmosphere ofsome reality (religious or quasi‑religious, mythological, socio‑political), while the outroduction is responsible for the culmination of this experience. In Forsberg’s albums, it is possible to add several generalized semantic circles into which introductions and outroductions fit. Each of these items has an album/track relation with text enabled.

Opis:
The definite article in the Modern Nordic languages is a suffix, etymologically related to a demonstrative. The form is not attested in runic inscriptions, the oldest linguistic sources, but first appears in Icelandic sagas as well as in Swedish and Danish legal codices from 13th century onwards. However, in these texts it does not appear with the same regularity as in modern languages. The Old Swedish form constitutes an intermediate form between a demonstrative, from which it is derived, and the article it has become in Modern Swedish. In the oldest texts it appears in contexts where demonstratives can only be found sporadically and its form suggests it no longer is a demonstrative. At the same time it is not yet obligatory. The aim of this paper is to show the grammaticalization of the definite article as a gradual, dynamic process, involving changes in the form and functional scope of the grammaticalizing item and to consider the properties of the Old Swedish form -in, derived from the distal demonstrative hin ‘that’.

Opis:
The paper examines genre strategies in a number of children’s books by the well-known Swedish author, Astrid Lindgren. Drawing on the reception theories of Hans Robert Jauss, Aidan Chambers and Reinbert Tabbert, the paper demonstrates that the stormy reception of Pippi Longstocking (1945), prompted by a review by Professor John Landquist, had principally genre-related grounds. The book made readers feel a sense of provocation because it challenged their archetextual horizon of expectations by evoking certain traditional genres and simultaneously twisting them in almost anarchic ways. In later books Astrid Lindgren makes a more elaborate use of classic genre structures. She generally chooses one well-known archetext as the generic dominant and allows it to interact with a set of other genres, thus calling forth the main aesthetic effect of the book from the archetextual dialogue between the dominant and the accompanying genres. The paper specifically investigates this polyphonic method in three of Lindgren’s most popular books. In All about the Bullerby children (1947–52) the generic dominant is idyll and the subordinated archetexts satire, parody, burlesque, farce, fairy tale and ballad. Mio, my son (1954) can be considered as an artistic fairy tale (Kunstmärchen), this dominant genre correlating with some other interwoven archetexts: apocryphal gospel, myth, legend, heroic tale and idyll. Finally, the generic dominant of Ronia, the robber’s daughter (1981) – a novel about the adventures of a band of robbers (Räuberroman) – finds its archetextual counterparts in folktale, popular legend, myth, burlesque, fantasy and Bildungsroman, among others.

Opis:
In this paper I investigate the narrative techniques in short stories by Stig Dagerman, one of the leading Swedish writers of the 1940s. I focus on the auctorial narrative situation, in which the narrator exposes his presence in the literary text, taking a position between fiction and reality outside the literature. My observation is that this phenomenon is characteristic for Dagerman’s short stories and that it can be further examined through the perspective of skaz, the oral form of narration. In the first part of my article I briefly discuss different concepts of skaz presented by different scholars, e.g., Eikhenbaum, Vinogradov and Bakhtin, and I point out their limitations. In my analysis I use Titunik’s model of skaz, which makes it possible for me to describe this narrative device in the most complex way with different kinds of determinants, namely grammatical, situative, expressive, allocutive, dialectical and semantic ones. In the second part of my article I show how these determinants manifest themselves in Dagerman’s short stories. The third section of the article includes my conclusions from the analysis. Dagerman uses the technique of skaz in his short stories frequently and intentionally, both in homodiegetic and in the heterodiegetic narration. He applies all determinants of skaz from Titunik’s model, a number of different ones at the same time. He uses dialectical determinants of skaz at the lowest pitch, he rather concentrates on expressive and allocutive ones. The narrator does not only mark his position in the literary text, but he also draws the attention to the presence of the narratee. In this way the very act of communication is stressed in Dagerman’s short stories. The analysis of skaz can therefore make an interesting contribution to the studies of communication strategies in Dagerman’s short stories.

In the history of Sweden the years 1611–1718 are the so-called great power era (Swedish: stormaktstiden), the period of geographic and economic expansion, as well as the formation of a romantic image of own nation, state and language. In this age, the foundations of today’s Old Norse studies were shaped, and the interest in the language and history of the language took peculiar forms in nationalist glottogony, as in Olof von Rudbeck, the author of a popular work Atland eller Manheim, in which he pointed out that the Swedish language is in fact the language that Adam used in Eden. Strong nationalist tendencies and a growing interest in the native language were accompanied by the unusual situation of the publishing market in the history of the Swedish language, as this was the only time when native texts, not translations definitively prevailed.

The article studies two of the oldest Swedish texts, the legal codices from the province of Västergötland, Äldre Västgötalagen (ÄVL), dated at 1225 and Yngre Västgötalagen (YVL), dated at ca 1280. The younger of the texts is a continuation of the older one and includes several additions. The texts are compared with particular respect to the nominal categories – the developing definiteness and thedeclining case. In particular, the definite forms are studied in much detail. The results confirm an earlier hypothesis that the younger text is based on a copy of the older one different from the one in our possession today. Also, it substantiates the claim that this missing original was more archaic than the one surviving today.

This study aims to illustrate how visual and auditory perception are conceptualized in Swedish and what differences there are between them. Previous studies often discuss perception in relation to the oppositely directed motions between the perceiver and the object perceived. In the Perceiver-as-Source type, perception occurs when our eyes/gaze reach the object perceived. In the Perceived-as-Source type, perception takes place when sense stimuli reach the perceiver. The data show two differences between visual and auditory perception. First, we find more metaphorical expressions for visual perception than for auditory perception. Second, we also find that, while visual perception has a stronger connection to the Perceiver-as-Source type, auditory perception is more strongly connected to the Perceived-as-Source type. These two differences are explained by the function of the perceptual organs.

Coming nearer and nearer: A cognitive grammar account of the third person plural impersonalThe present paper analyses different readings of the 3pl impersonal pronoun (3pl IMP) from the Cognitive Grammar (CG) perspective. While the well-known taxonomy established for 3pl impersonals in European languages by Siewierska & Papastathi (2011) highlights contextual features of different readings of the pronoun, CG is able to focus on what has been neglected in this approach and offers a more adequate analysis of the 3pl IMP as an important means of portraying the agent. In the article the impersonal agent is presented as unspecified and, as such, defocused to various degrees. Evidence is provided for a set of four prototypical readings of the pronoun – the corporate, the vague, the specific and the universal – constituting reference points within a continuum and differentiated as to the agent portrayal. Establishing such portrayals is seen as a phenomenon rooted in the cognitively basic mechanism of distancing, which in the case of the 3pl IMPs means approaching the perceived object by the conceptualizer, as in the schema underlying the difference between a count noun and a mass noun. The mechanism is illustrated by language data taken from English and Swedish. Podchodząc coraz bliżej. Odczytania zaimka 3 os. l. mn. w funkcji bezosobowej w ujęciu gramatyki kognitywnejNiniejszy artykuł analizuje różne odczytania zaimka 3 os. l. mn. (np. pol. oni, ang. they), wykorzystywanego w funkcji bezosobowej, z punktu widzenia gramatyki kognitywnej w ujęciu R. W. Langackera. Omówione zostają cztery prototypowe odczytania zaimka - korporacyjne, niejasne, specyficzne i uniwersalne, stanowiące punkty odniesienia w kontinuum, które umożliwia określoną interpretację treści analizowanej jednostki językowej. Mechanizm ilustrują dane językowe zaczerpnięte z języka angielskiego i języka szwedzkiego.
