Opis:
French philosopher Paul Ricoeur (1913-2005) is best known as the co-founder of modern hermeneutics. Under this framework, he developed a practical philosophy (theory of action). Its applications can be found in his attitude to public and civic issues (e.g. expressed in skepticism to the course of events in May 1968 or protests against the worsening social inequalities), where there was always a religious theme, resulting from a strong Christian faith rooted in the Protestant profile. Ricoeur differentiated politics as classically understood politics as a space for joint action within a framework of policies rather than more contemporary views, where it is associated with gaining and securing power. He pointed to the need for dialogue and negotiations between the government and the social partners, trade unions and political adversaries. Political activity becomes similar to practical wisdom.

Woolf’s maturing as a writer was deeply influenced by her traumatic experiences in childhood, the (in)capacitating states of mental instability, as well as her proto-feminist convictions. Long before Barthes, she toppled the traditional position of the author, and her literary enshrinement of “the other reality” reached unity with the world rather than individuality. This article ponders Woolf’s creative impulse and investigates her autobiographical writings to show the import of their impact on her fiction, which, as Woolfian scholarship suggests, can be viewed as autobiographical, too. I argue that philosophical hermeneutics sheds light on the self-portrait that emerges from Woolf’s autobiographical writings and offers a rewarding insight into her path of becoming an author. I assert that Paul Ricoeur’s philosophy of subjectivity, and, in particular, his notion of narrative identity provide a route to examine how Woolf discovers her writing voice. In light of his hermeneutics of the self, the dispersed elements of the narrative of life can be seen as a possibility of self-encounter. Woolf’s writings bespeak her gradually evolving self-knowledge and self-understanding, which come from the configuration of those separate “stories” into a meaningful whole. The article also interprets Woolf’s autobiographical writings through the prism of Michel Foucault’s reflection on discourse and subjectivity, indicating that her texts instantiate his assertion of the subject’s constant disappearance.

Ricoeur's theory of narrative identity is not his last word when it comes to philosophy of selfhood. This paper aims to outline how the findings of one of Ricoeur's final books, The Course of Recognition fit into Ricoeur’s philosophy of selfhood, and to do so by comparing Ricoeur’s analyses of the concept of recognition and Stanley Cavell’s explorations of the idea of acknowledgment. Cavell, much of whose philosophy investigates “the extent to which my relation to myself is figured in my relation to my words,” can show recognition to be not only the gaining of knowledge, but the outward affirmation, acceptance, agreement to that knowledge (in language). That requirement of outwardness, of intersubjectivity, is what makes acknowledgment crucial for theories of selfhood.

Following the thought of Ricoeur, humanization of health lies between virtue and duty. The first observation is to emphasize the effort. Ricoeur focuses the articulation that the author makes the teleological tradition, embodied especially in Aristotle, with the deontological tradition, with attention mainly Kant. Noting that each tradition has its share of truth, since the moral life is looking good and obedience to rules, Paul Ricoeur seeks to articulate the two traditions: the search for the good life must pass the scrutiny of the rules, that the tradition cultural consecrated. In this articulation, the first set as a criterion of the moral demand of the good, the good life, the life fulfilled life. Meanwhile, Ricoeur gives primacy to the Aristotelian tradition.

In the article 'The change a way of life' - with reference to hermeneutic ideas of philosophy I present a hermeneutic conceptions of Gadamer's, Ricoeur's and the late Wittgenstein's from a therapeutic perspective. I point out that terms such as: the understanding conditions, changing a way of life and being in the world, plays the fundamental role in the hermeneutic conceptions. Ricoeur as well as Wittgenstein, analising these terms from language perspective, schow us, that the philosophical thinking suppouse to lead to expansion of man's self-consciousness and to understending the different forms of life. From that angle that idea of philosophy could be understanded as a kind of efford tend towards to change our looking at things, providing the subject to a kind of transformation. This process can be recognized as therapeutical because it force us to schake a many of our opinions, hidden prejudices, beliefs about ourselfs and about the world, which are treated as a background of our daily life. In connection with that I analyze the similarities between Ricoeur's and Wittgenstein's projects on one hand, and the Freud's psychoanalysis on the other.

This paper is to present the notion of man as the keyword in the philosophy of Paul Ricoeur, which can be referred to as philosophical anthropology. The article is based on an analysis of three conceptual metaphors chosen in Le volontaire et l’involontaire. The author applies the theory of the linguistic picture of the world and some issues of cognitive linguistics. She uses primarily the concept of conceptual metaphors by George Lakoff and Mark Johnson, in particular the metaphor of a container (MAN AS A CONTAINER). The discussion centres on three metaphors MAN AS A DECISION, MAN AS AN ACTION and MAN AS A CONSENT defining in part the notion of man in Le volontaire et l’involontaire.

The paradigm of legal positivism, historically the most important attempt at turning law into science, has been subject to thorough criticism in past decades. The criticism has concerned the most important features of legal positivism, and especially the assumption of separation of law and morality, the dogma of statue being the only source of law, and the linguistic methods of interpreting legal texts. With a crisis of the positive paradigms, the demand for new, humanistic grounds for analysing philosophical and legal questions is intensifying. This is the reason for this article’s attempt to point to the application of Paul Ricoeur’s achievements to the key questions of the philosophy of law. It must be emphasised that his works, and especially Soimême comme un autre, may serve as a foundation for a philosophy of law rejecting the problematic claims about the dualism of being and obligation, the distinction of descriptive and prescriptive languages, and also the separation of law and morality. Thanks to this, the legal topos pacta sunt servanda (agreements must be kept) finds a reinforcement in the ontology of the subject applying law and can be understood as an ethically significant pattern of identity of the self. Equally fruitful seems the possibility of combining the questions of the ontology of the subject applying law with the question of a legal text and its interpretation. The assumption of Ricoeur’s perspective leads to a reduction in the distance between the legal text and its addressee, emphasised by the critics of legal positivism. This rapprochement becomes possible thanks to the connection of the question of the narrative that a legal text is with the question of narrativisation of the subject (i.e. the interpreter of a legal text), being itself in the ipse sense, i.e. applying the law.

To overcome the existence with a word. With Paul Ricoeur on finitude. The purpose of this article is to present the main theses of Jarosław Jakubowski’s book entitled Skończoność egzystencjalna. Studium nad filozofią Paula Ricoeura [Existential finitude: A study on the philosophy of Paul Ricoeur] (Jakubowski, 2017), and their critical assimilation. In spite of this, or perhaps because the book itself deserves the highest praise, it calls for the deconstruction of its basic assumptions. In Part I the article reconstructs the main theses of Jakubowski’s work. In Part II, it argues that Jakubowski’s work is founded on the incorrect interpretation of the idea of finitude as conceived of by Heidegger. Heidegger is understood here as a representative of existentialism. This results in the fact that in spite of Jakubowski’s attempts to present Ricoeur’s philosophy as a new concept of human subjectivity, which, according to Jakubowski, best describes the title category of finitude, it fails to transcend frameworks arising from the so-called “metaphysics of the presence”.

In 2001, a Texan housewife, Andrea Yates, drowned her five children in a bathtub, claiming that she had killed them to save them from evil. Her life sentence for murder was later suspended, and Yates was transferred to a psychiatric facility. In 2009, Joyce Carol Oates published the short story “Dear Husband,” inspired by the Yates case. The author structured her story as a letter which Lauri Lynn writes to her husband to confess to the murder of their five children before she takes her life. The aim of this article is to analyze the story using the categories elaborated by Paul Ricoeur to define evil and its symbolism and to try to answer the question: is Andrea Yates/Lauri Lynn a villain or a victim?
