Aim. This article presents the status of the Greek Catholic Church during a defined period. It brings the functioning of this religion in the period of normalisation of society closer. Methods. Our study is the result of archival and document-based research, as well as expert studies and monographs dealing with the above-mentioned issue. Results. Although we can define the period studied in our research as a period of relative freedom when compared with the years 1950–1967, it cannot be perceived as a total liberation of the Church. Unfortunately, the political reality was also reflected in the life and functioning of the Church itself. The Greek Catholic Church and its leaders understood that without the necessary support from the state and regime, they would lose their freedom mainly attained in the first half of 1968. Conclusion. The Greek Catholic Church had to face several important and ground-breaking tasks that were to ensure its stability for functioning and administration after 18 years of its non-existence. This involved receiving state consent for Consecrator ThDr. Basil (Vasiľ) Hopko, leadership of the Greek Catholic Church in general, consolidation of relationships and conflict resolution between the Greek Catholic Church and the Orthodox Church, or even the area of support and consent for building its own institute of theological formation.

Aim. The article discusses the status of the Greek Catholic Church from 1948 to 1950. It also presents how this period was presented through media. Since it is possible to investigate this aspect within the framework of a comparison of several media channels, we have decided to introduce the comparison through the perspective of the daily-newspaper Rudé právo. Methods. The findings of our research study are based on the data collected from archival and documentary sources, as well as professional studies and monographs related to the above-mentioned topic. Results. Based on our research topic, we can understand how the attitude towards the Greek Catholic Church changed after the events of February 1948 and what impact the change of regime had on its functioning. Regarding media, we can observe how the pressure on the Greek Catholic Church changed in relation to the regime change and individual historical events, and how the media expressed its opinion on the Church. Conclusion. Media is not only a source of information for people, but it also creates public opinion, and therefore, it was extremely important to control this state apparatus in the past. We must understand that availability of information in the 1950s and today is significantly different. Catholic periodicals were almost non-existent and thus, people often received misleading or false information. Through our research, which is presented in the tabular presentation of data, we can discover the increasing pressure against the Church, and the response of the public to the Church.

Opis:
The study presents selected aspects of the pastoral and writing output of Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytsky. Obviously, they do not encompass or exhaust the complete range of his activity and genuine achievements during his ministry in the Greek Catholic Church. But it was not the purpose of this study to list all the accomplishments or to emphasize the general effect of the works of this outstanding hierarch of the Church. The overriding reason for bringing out Sheptytsky’s profile was the attempt to show him against the background of his epoch and its specific historical-religious circumstances, in order to draw attention to his stance as a person and Church hierarch in the context of essential historical challenges. The following issues are tackled: Sheptytsky’s impact on the shaping of organizational and spiritual matters of his Church, his initiation of the movement of renewal of the Eastern rite in the Eastern Catholic Church, his openness to cooperation and strengthening relations within the Christian communities. Last but not least, the author wished to accentuate the personal authenticity of the Metropolitan, who has not always been assessed in a reliable and objective way.

Greek Catholic Churches are called to be faithful to Eastern tradition, to testify about it in the Catholic community, and thus be an example for Orthodox Christians, what means living communion with the Catholic Church.

Opis:
This article is an attempt to show the attitude of the Greek-Catholic hierarchy in the Polish lands to the events of the Napoleonic era. The subject is discussed on the basis of the behavior of two Uniate bishops, presenting contradictory views and political affiliation. The Greek-Catholic bishop of Przemysl, Antoni Angełłowicz, since 1808 the Greek-Catholic Archbishop of Galicia, was a strong advocate of the alliance with the Habsburg monarchy, moreover, he was loyal to the Austrian emperor and supported his policy. The bishop of the neighboring with Galicia Greek-Catholic diocese of Chelm, Ferdinand Ciechanowski, agreed with the attitudes of Polish society, and clearly supported the policy of the French emperor Napoleon Bonaparte. The pastoral letters of metropolitan Angełłowicz (1805), and bishop Ciechanowski (1812) together with other sources to this period became the basis for the analysis and comparison of different attitudes and political views of both representatives of the hierarchy. The pastoral letter of 1805 was released at a critical moment of the history of Austria, after Austrian defeat in the Battle of Ulm with the forces of Napoleon and Vienna and the Czech lands occupied by the French . The letter contained a declaration of the bishop’s and the Galician Ruthenians’ loyalty to the Austrian monarchy and the Emperor of Austria. Anti-French attitudes of Angełłowicz was confirmed in two political pamphlets that were written by him and published under the title Who is the party provoking: Austria or France? (1805) and Austrian Patriot Comments on Certain Articles from Foreign Newspapers (1809). Disclosure of political sympathies forced the Metropolitam to temporarily leave Lviv after the Galicia went under occupation by the Polish army in 1809 A completely different personality was Uniate bishop of Chelm, Ferdynand Dąbrowa Ciechanowski. The cardinal was involved in the political life of the Duchy of Warsaw (as a senator), especially in the events of 1812 and preparations for the "Polish War", led by Emperor Napoleon. Ciechanowski took part in the Parliament of 1812 and the establishment of the General Confederation of the Polish Kingdom, which proclaimed the rebirth of an independent state. Under the influence of the patriotic atmosphere he announced the pastoral letter to priests and faithful of his diocese on June 28th, 1812. He expressed universal joy from the rebirth of an independent Poland and solidarity with the Polish society. The consequences of his pro-Polish speaking incurred after Napoleon’s defeat in Russia and Russian invasion of the Duchy of Warsaw in 1813, then he was forced to temporarily leave his diocese to avoid imprisonment. In the years of his reign (died in 1828) Ciechanowski carried out a number of important reforms for the Greek-Catholic dioceses, patterning the organization and functioning on the Latin Church.

The article analyzes the Greek Catholic prayers and use of the honorific category therein. To appeal to the Lord, Theotokos and the saints, the form You (sg.) is used. It is a special lexical form of politeness. The well-known traditional you (pl.) where respect for the addressee is expressed in religious texts (sermons, prayers) is replaced by the honorific form of You (sg.). The article emphasizes the role of the honorific in religious communication, its functioning in the religious text since honorific (respectful) forms are used to describe the actions of individuals commanding respect (from the speaker’s point of view). The researched material consists of the texts of the prayers and Slavonic Akathists which are used in the Eastern Worship.

The article points to religion as a significant element of a nation’s culture and social consciousness influencing the preservation of the cultural identity of the Ukrainian minority, the community of which found itself in the European civilization circle within the Republic of Poland. The religious affiliation of the Ukrainian minority in Poland mainly regarded two rites: Greek Catholic and Orthodox. Since the beginning of its history the Greek Catholic Church, within the boundaries of the Polish state, has played the role of moral and intellectual support and promoted the statehood aspirations with the preservation of Ukrainian’s separate religious identity. The Orthodox Church in the Republic of Poland, dominated by the Russian influences, did not play a significant role in the development of Ukrainian minority’s national consciousness, yet both Churches contributed to the process of transformations in the social and politi-cal life of Ukrainians in Poland.

This thesis is a study of the role of Andrei Šeptytsky, the Metropolitan of the Ukrainian GreekCatholic Church, in discussions on articles of the Concordat between the Apostolic See and Poland. The archival documents proved a particular involvement of Šeptytsky in preparation of the concordat’s articles dealing with the Church’s property and financial independence. In those endeavors, Šeptytsky was concerned not only with the interests of his Greek-catholic clergy, but with the welfare of Catholic clergy in all Polish eparchies, advocating further independency of the Church from state authorities.

It was the aim of the study to register and analyze manuscripts and prints written in the Cyrillic which have been collected in Warmia and Mazury. The article describes written monuments from the collections of libraries in Olsztyn: the library in Warmia and Mazury Seminary Hosianum (parchment leaves from the 14th century), University of Warmia and Mazury Library (manuscript Swiatcy from 1848), and Museum of Warmia and Mazury Library (two copies of the Lvov publication of the Ałtar Gospel Book from 1897), as well as the municipal and regional libraries (Monthły Menaion for October printed in Moscow in 1750) and a private collection (the Altar Gospel Book from 1815 printed in Poczajów. A volume of Służebnik (Wilno-Supraśl, 1692-1695) is in the possession of a Greek-Catholic parishioner from Giżycko. Additionally, volumes from the Old Believers’ monastery and Orthodox church in Wojnowo were described. Courtesy of their owners, the study is based also on manuscripts and prints which belong to the Old Believers from Ukta, Wojnowo, Ruciane-Nida and Piaski. The guardian of the Old Believers Monastery of Saviour and Holy Trinity allowed the author to photograph and describe the manuscripts and prints which have not been so far academically analysed. They are now stored in the Digital Library of the University of Warmia and Mazury thanks to a project financed by the National Science Centre. The described volumes, mainly liturgical in their character, served the needs of Christians in the east: Orthodox Christians, Old Believers and Greek-Catholics.
