W czerwcu 1941 roku do ataku na ZSRS niemieckie wojska pancerne (Panzertruppen) mogły wykorzystać 17 pułków pancernych (w 17 dywizjach pancernych), które różniły się zarówno pod względem liczebnym, jak i jakościowym. Niemcy po kampanii na zachodzie Europy stworzyli nowe dywizje pancerne, ale przemysł zbrojeniowy nie był w stanie wyprodukować wystarczającej liczby czołgów średnich, mających wówczas stanowić główną siłę ognia. W związku z tym – w pewnym stopniu – zostali zmuszeni do użycia na szeroką skalę czołgów lekkich, które na początku lat czterdziestych XX wieku nie odpowiadały potrzebom pola walki. Chociaż stan niemieckich jednostek pancernych w czerwcu 1941 roku był niezadowalający, to nie ich jakość stanowiła główny powód porażki operacji „Barbarossa” (Unternehmen Barbarossa).
In June 1941, the German armoured force had 17 armoured regiments (in 17 armoured divisions) at its disposal for the attack on the USSR, which varied in numbers and quality. After the campaign in Western Europe, Germany created new armoured divisions, but the arms industry was unable to produce a sufficient number of medium tanks, intended to be the main firepower at the time. As a result, the Pazerwaffe – to some extent – was forced to use on a large scale light tanks, which at the beginning of the 1940s did not meet the needs of the battlefield. Despite the unsatisfactory condition of the German armoured regiments in June 1941, it was not their quality that was the main factor in the failure of Operation Barbarossa.

The paper focuses on one of the most eminent poets of the twelfth century. He is called Arch-poet (vates vatum) because we do not know his real name. Only nine poems have been preserved to date, and they can be found in the codes of Götingen and Brussels. The Corpus Archipoetae contains poems addressed to the poet’s patron Reinald of Dassel, arch-chancellor of Frederick I Barbarossa and archbishop of Cologne. One may assume that the poems that have been preserved make up only a part of the poet’s writing. They have been selected and preserved with respect to the person of the Chancellor of the Empire. They can be included within the genre of occasional poetry, almost each of them contains some kind of request of support. This fact, however, does not deprive them of any poetic value or overshadow the great talent, erudition, and individuality of the poet. The preserved poems contain personal hints, so that we can re-construct five years from the life of Arch-poet, his relationship with the patron and protector, his education, and also his unusually interesting personality and individuality.

The subject of the analysis is German and Soviet military operations in the southern sector of the eastern front, with a particular emphasis on the role of rivers and the Black Sea, during these operations. The time frame of the paper includes the beginning of Operation Barbarossa, in June 1941, until the capture of the Crimean peninsula by the Wehrmacht, in July 1942. The article begins with an attempt of defining concepts relevant for further study of the issues mentioned in the title. The role of the Black Sea and its watercourses is discussed and the fact that they played a very important role as defensive lines of the Red Army. The German army showed its huge military potential when crossing rivers. Military operations performed at the Black Sea became an integral element of the fights in the southern sector of the eastern front. The means of warfare involved as well as human and material losses may indicate a ruthlessness of the fighting and importance of the Black Sea theatre of war. Efforts and dedication of the both warring sides in the area of the Black Sea made history.
