In this paper, the author presents a pedagogical insight of conducting a detailed exploratory study through methodological departures within the subjective boundaries of a specific field. The work is based upon inferences drawn from the study of “queer” identities in an urban but inherently parochial setting of a postcolonial city – Kolkata. The paper attempts to map and chart the various aspects of conducting qualitative research in a relatively unexplored area, with rapidly evolving socio-cultural values and systems of identity formation. The paper charts out the experiences from the field, while dealing with both the apparent and the esoteric, with objective and empirical evidence to support the arguments presented herein.

This paper outlines my concerns with Qualitative Data Analysis' (QDA) numerous remodelings of Grounded Theory (GT) and the subsequent eroding impact. I cite several examples of the erosion and summarize essential elements of classic GT methodology. It is hoped that the article will clarify my concerns with the continuing enthusiasm but misunderstood embrace of GT by QDA methodologists and serve as a preliminary guide to novice researchers who wish to explore the fundamental principles of GT.

This paper focuses on the issue of integrating innovative methods into the teaching of literature in lower-secondary schools. It aims to highlight the factors that influence these methods’ use and thus fill a gap in the existing research in the field. The research inquiry is based on a qualitative approach; the group of respondents consists of male and female teachers working in lower-secondary schools at the time of the research. The structured interview method was chosen for data collection, and the data obtained was evaluated using grounded theory. We present the results obtained from 24 interviews. Due to the research’s qualitative nature, it is impossible to generalise from the findings. The so-called time and teacher factors and the classroom factors are associated with not using these methods, and developing competencies and applying them to life factors are associated with using them. The paper also comments on the influence of school support, the influence of inspiration from university teachers, and the positive experiences of the respondents. The influence of the age of the teachers was found to be insignificant.

Any proof of a hypothesis or research thesis requires the researcher to use methods that are optimally selected according to the organizational capabilities of the researcher, the adopted research budget, and, above all, the adopted research assumptions. An important factor is to optimize the possibility of obtaining a research result that most closely reflects the surrounding cognitive reality. In economics, which is included in the field of social sciences, an important plane of analysis is the so-called data, which the researcher must process and, using statistical methods, carry out the process of falsification or confirmation of the research hypothesis. An activity that broadens the cognitive value is qualitative methods and, more specifically, the information obtained using them. In this way, the researcher creates a comprehensive research process, in which quantitative methods are compiled with qualitative methods. Such a study is referred to as a method of triangulation of methods, which allows the researcher to confront the representative result of quantitative and qualitative research.
Każdy dowód hipotezy lub tezy badawczej wymaga od badacza zastosowania metod optymalnie dobranych do możliwości organizacyjnych badacza, przyjętego budżetu badawczego, a przede wszystkim przyjętych założeń badawczych. Ważnym czynnikiem jest optymalizacja możliwości uzyskania wyniku badań, który w największym stopniu odzwierciedla otaczającą rzeczywistość poznawczą. W ekonomii, zaliczanej do dziedziny nauk społecznych, ważną płaszczyzną analizy są tzw. dane, które badacz musi przetworzyć i przy użyciu metod statystycznych przeprowadzić proces falsyfikacji lub potwierdzenia hipotezy badawczej. Działaniem pogłębiającym wartość poznawczą są metody jakościowe, a dokładniej informacje uzyskane za ich pomocą. W ten sposób badacz tworzy kompleksowy proces badawczy, w którym metody ilościowe zestawione są z metodami jakościowymi. Takie badanie określa się mianem metody triangulacji metod, która pozwala badaczowi skonfrontować reprezentatywny wynik ilościowy z jakościowym rezultatem badań.

Autor artykułu stawia tezę, że dynamicznie rozkrzewiające się badania jakościowe nie mogą uwolnić się od metodologicznej tradycji pozytywizmu, a projekty badawcze realizowane przez badaczy społecznych często wpadają w scjentystyczne pułapki. W rezultacie badania jakościowe nierzadko stają się rewersem badań ilościowych. Dzieje się tak, ponieważ badacze nie są w stanie uwolnić się od kulturowej matrycy modernizmu, której są „nosicielami” i której składowe, na ogół nieświadomie wciąż aplikują do badania społeczeństw ponowoczesnych.
The author of the article states that the dynamically springing up qualitative research cannot free itself from the methodological tradition of positivism and the research projects carried out by social researchers very often fall into scientistic traps. As a result, the qualitative research frequently becomes the reverse of quantitative research. It happens so, because the researchers are not able to free themselves from the cultural matrix of modernism, whose “carriers” they are and whose components, usually unconsciously, they apply to their research on post-modern societies.

The basic economic goal of pig iron process is to produce a finished product at the highest possible quality and at the lowest possible cost. The quality of pig iron depends on the quality of raw materials used in the process, quality of fuels and process parameters. The cost of fuel is one of the basic component of cost of pig iron production. Therefore, consumption of fuels should be minimized while maintaining its high quality. The main technological fuel of this process is blast furnace coke. Very often, cheaper alternative kinds of fuels are used in the form of finer sorts of coke or alternative fuels (e.g. coal dust). However, they can be used only in a limited amount. The aim of the paper is the assessment of the selected quality parameters of stabilized coke used in the blast furnace process and the comparison of their values with requirements.

The dissemination of social media and the growing resources of big data create both new opportunities for urban space analysis and new challenges for contemporary policy making. Among the sources useful from this standpoint there are, inter alia, photos posted on Instagram. They can easily become the basis for behavioural analysis of the quality of urban life based on complete sampling and conducted in the method of deskresearch. The article uses photographs published on Instagram for the purpose of exploratory analysis of land use on the examples of five parks located in New York. This makes it possible to determine the nature and ways of perception of selected spaces.
Upowszechnienie mediów społecznościowych i rosnące zasoby danych typu big data tworzą zarówno nowe możliwości dla analiz przestrzeni zurbanizowanej, jak i wyzwania dla współczesnego procesu stanowienia polityki publicznej. Wśród źródeł użytecznych z tego punktu widzenia są między innymi zdjęcia publikowane na Instagramie. Mogą one łatwo się stać przedmiotem behawioralnej analizy jakości życia w przestrzeni miejskiej na podstawie próby złożonej z całej populacji i być wykonywane w formule desk research. Artykuł używa fotografii publikowanych na Instagramie w celu analizy eksploracyjnej użytkowania przestrzeni na przykładzie pięciu parków zlokalizowanych w Nowym Jorku. Umożliwia to określenie charakteru i sposobów postrzegania wybranych przestrzeni.

The article contributes to a better understanding of the role of research in the policies of the states that are scientifically engaged in the High North. The research covers 17 European states: six are Arctic and 11 non-Arctic, which were selected according to the follow- ing (at least one) formulated criteria: having an established tradition of carrying out scientific research in the Arctic region; having issued Arctic policy documents and/or Arctic research strategies; participation in the activities of the Arctic Council; and having gained member- ship of the International Arctic Science Committee (IASC). In the analysis we have applied a mixed research method, since it incorporates elements of both qualitative and quantitative approaches and offers a more comprehensive review of the scrutinised texts. The qualitative analysis relies on a discourse analysis (predicate analysis). The quantitative part of the analysis utilizes the instruments of a software research tool — The AntConc. In the end, the outcomes of both methods are merged and compared. The study reveals that conducting scientific re- search is not a top priority for all Arctic states. However, it has the highest similarity in terms of applied approaches among Arctic states as compared to other fields (e.g. the economy, se- curity or pollution). At the same time, the environment and climate change are perceived to be the most important drivers behind Arctic research as defined in the Arctic states’ strategies. Moreover, there are major differences among both Arctic and non-Arctic states in terms of the level of accuracy in the presentation of their research activities, particularly with regard to the implementation of scientific programmes and research aims. Finally, the research indicates that all states highlight that international scientific cooperation stimulates cooperation also in other areas and that research provides information that supports decision making and policy creation

Interviews are a widely used method in maritime research using qualitative methodologies. Expert interviews are conducted with people who have special knowledge because of their professional position. The status of the interviewer when using expert interviews brings forth certain distinct nuances due to the specific nature of the interview methodology and epistemological considerations. A renowned and senior maritime specialist or a veteran maritime professional researching the nuances of their own field encounter methodological challenges while interviewing other experts during data collection. The paper aims to examine the impact on qualitative data collected in interviews when the interviewers themselves are experts in the field of research. The concepts from the social science research from various disciplines have been examined and discussed highlighting the methodological challenges.

Celem autorki było zaproponowanie wprowadzenia częściowo zmodyfikowanej metody pól semantycznych do analizy i interpretacji dłuższych odpowiedzi na pytania otwarte w badaniach z zakresu geografii społecznej i dydaktyki geografii. Opracowanie zawiera opis klasycznej metody pól semantycznych oraz zakres jej modyfikacji, wykonanej na potrzeby realizacji badań poświęconych procesowi wchodzenia absolwentów studiów geograficznych na rynek pracy wraz z przykładowymi rezultatami zastosowania tej metody. Tak prowadzona analiza odpowiedzi na pytanie otwarte, oprócz przetransponowania zawartości treści na dane ilościowe, pozwoliła na metodycznie uzasadnione, przejrzyste i relatywnie łatwe w dalszej procedurze badawczej porównywanie wyników i formułowanie prawidłowości dotyczących jakościowych wymiarów eksplorowanego zagadnienia. Możliwości, które stwarza zarówno klasyczna jak i zmodyfikowana metoda pól semantycznych, wydają się czynić ją przydatną także w badaniach dotyczących procesu kształcenia, zwłaszcza w takich jego aspektach, jak efektywność, jakość i satysfakcja.
The aim of the paper is to propose using the adopted and partly modified semantic field method for the analysis and interpretation of longer answers for open questions in social geography and educational surveys. The article consists of both the classic semantic field method description and the scope of its modification done for surveying geography graduates’ transition to the labour market. It also presents some results of this transition process which would not be possible to identify without using the modified semantic field method during the analysis of the collected material. The modified semantic field method, apart from transforming qualitative material into quantitative data, allows for a methodologically explained, clear, easy process of analysing, as well as concluding and formulating rules devoted to quantitative spheres of the problem. Benefits of using both the classic and modified semantic field method seem to encourage scientists to use it in educational studies and surveys. The most suitable topics for using the method in educational studies are those devoted to the effectiveness, quality and satisfaction.

In this paper, using cloud model and Delphi, we build a comprehensive evaluation cloud model to solve the problems of qualitative description and quantitative transformation in ship navigation adaptability comprehensive evaluation. In the model, the normal cloud generator is used to find optimal cloud models of reviews and evaluation factors. The weight of each evaluation factor is determined by cloud model and Delphi. The floating cloud algorithm is applied to aggregate the bottom level’s evaluation factors, and comprehensive cloud algorithm is used to aggregate the highest level’s evaluation factors to get comprehensive evaluation cloud model. Finally, evaluation result is got by matching comprehensive evaluation cloud model and optimal cloud model of reviews. As case study, the model is applied to the small LNG ship’s navigation adaptability in Southeast Asia. Compared with the fuzzy comprehensive evaluation method, the model proposed in this paper is more intuitive and reliable in comprehensive evaluation of the small LNG ship’s navigation adaptability.

W pracy przedstawiono charakterystykę i analizę jakościową procesów realizowanych w podmiocie badawczym. Podmiotem badawczym jest przedsiębiorstwo produkcyjne, zajmującej się wytwarzaniem lamp oświetleniowych. Przedstawiono podstawowe produkty oferowane przez podmiot badawczy oraz dokonano analizy procesów wytwórczych na przykładzie produktu modelowego. Charakterystyka strumienia wartości kolejnych procesów wytwórczych dokonana została na przykładzie lampy typu Kleks. Dokonana została analiza jakościowa przedstawionych procesów, zidentyfikowano typy niezgodności i dokonano ich hierarchizacji z wykorzystaniem analizy Pareto-Lorenza. W pracy zawarto również ocenę ryzyka związanego z występowaniem określonych wcześniej niezgodności. Określono przyczyny i skutki ich występowania oraz oszacowano Liczbę Priorytetową Ryzyka. Analiza poziomu jakości objęła również zaplanowanie działań korygujących mających na celu ograniczenie ryzyka wytworzenia elementów niezgodnych z założoną specyfikacją techniczną w kolejnym cyklu produkcyjnym.
The paper presents the characteristics and qualitative analysis of the processes carried out in the research entity. The research company is a manufacturing company, which manufactures lighting lamps. The basic products offered by the researcher are presented, and the manufacturing processes are analyzed on the example of the model product. The value stream of subsequent production processes is characterized by the Kleks type. Quality analysis of the presented processes was performed, types of nonconformities were identified, and hierarchies were analyzed using the Pareto-Lorenz analysis. The study also includes an assessment of the risks associated with the occurrence of certain previously non-compliance. The causes and effects of their occurrence and the Priority Risk have been identified. The quality level analysis also included planning corrective measures aimed at limiting the risk of producing nonconforming items in the next production cycle.

Multistage expert surveys like the Delphi method are proven concepts for technology forecasting that enable the prediction of content-related and temporal development in fields of innovation (e.g., [1, 2]). Advantages of these qualitative multistage methods are a simple and easy to understand concept while still delivering valid results [3]. Nevertheless, the literature also points out certain disadvantages especially in large-scale technology forecasts in particularly abstract fields of innovation [4]. The proposed approach highlights the usefulness of the repertory grid method as an alternative for technology forecasting and as a first step for preference measurement. The basic approach from Baier and Kohler [5] is modified in-so-far that an online survey reduces the cognitive burden for the experts and simplifies the data collection process. Advantages over alternative approaches through its simple structure and through combining qualitative and quantitative methods are shown and an adaption on an actual field of innovation – civil drones in Germany – is done. The measurement of a common terminology for all experts minimizes misunderstandings during the interview and the achievement of an inter-individual comparable level of abstraction is forced by the laddering technique [6] during the interview.

Przypomnienie teoretycznych osiągnięć polskiego etnologa (Stanisława Poniatowskiego) jest zachęceniem do retrospektywnego spojrzenia na osiągnięcia teoretyczne i metodologiczne nauk humanistycznych i nauk społecznych celem prospektywnego wypracowania najwartościowszego teoretyczne i metodologiczne modelu w naukach o polityce. Ważnym powodem, dla którego należy odnieść się do nauk o kulturze, w dyskusji nad teoretycznymi i metodologicznymi podstawami w naukach o polityce, jest coraz większa świadomość związana z funkcją kultury nie tylko w odniesieniu do takich zagadnień jak: tożsamość, pochodzenie etniczne, narodowość, ale także w kwestiach tak podstawowych, jak uwarunkowania kulturowe teorii i metodologii nauk o polityce. Teoretyczny model przedstawiony w artykule zasługuje w pełni na określenie go jako holistyczny (całościowy). Wydaje się, że dzisiaj może on spełniać bardzo ważną funkcję heurystyczną w naukach humanistycznych i społecznych, w tym w naukach politycznych.
Reminder theoretical achievements of Polish ethnologist (Stanisław Poniatowski) is to encourage a retrospective look at the achievements of theoretical and methodological humanities and social sciences to prospectively determine the most valuable theoretical and methodological models in science policy. An important reason why you should refer to the teachings of the culture in the theoretical and methodological discussions in the science of politics, is increasingly aware of the role of culture not only in specific issues such as identity, ethnicity, nationality, but in the most general and methodological sense. The theoretical model presented in the article deserves fully to describe it as holistic. It seems that today he can fulfill a very important heuristic function in the humanities and social sciences, including political sciences.
