Opis:
The paper presents results of research on the preparation of cellulose membranes with graphite oxide addition (GO/CEL). Initially, a cellulose (CEL) solution in 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazole acetate (EMIMAc) was obtained, to which graphene oxide (GO) dispersed in N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) was added. From this solution, composite membranes were formed using phase inversion method. It was observed that the GO addition influences the physico-chemical properties of GO/CEL composite membranes, resulting in an increase in their mass per unit area, thickness and density, and a decrease in sorption properties. In addition, the study of transport properties has shown that GO/CEL membranes do not absorb BSA particles on their surface, which prevents the unfavorable phenomenon of fouling. An important feature of the obtained membranes is the specific permeate flux which reaches high values (~124 L/m2 ×h) at 3.8% of the GO addition to the cellulose matrix.

Opis:
This work is the continuation and refinement of already published communications based on PET/EG nanocomposites prepared by in situ polymerization1, 2. In this study, nanocomposites based on poly(ethylene terephthalate) with expanded graphite were compared to those with functionalized graphite sheets (GO). The results suggest that the degree of dispersion of nanoparticles in the PET matrix has important effect on the structure and physical properties of the nanocomposites. The existence of graphene sheets nanoparticles enhances the crystallization rate of PET. It has been confirmed that in situ polymerization is the effective method for preparation nanocomposites which can avoid the agglomeration of nanoparticles in polymer matrices and improve the interfacial interaction between nanofiller and polymer matrix. The obtained results have shown also that due to the presence of functional groups on GO surface the interactions with PET matrix can be stronger than in the case of exfoliated graphene (EG) and matrix.

The paper presents the results of microbiological tests of composite membranes made of cellulose (CEL) with graphene oxide (GO) admixture. At the beginning, the antibacterial properties of the GO in aqueous solutions of various concentrations (0.001; 0.01; 0.1% w/w) were studied, and the obtained results allowed to use GO as an additive to cellulose membranes. The solution used to prepare the membranes was a 5% cellulose solution (CEL) in 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate (EMIMAc), into which various amounts of graphene oxide (GO) dispersed in N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) were added (0.5÷28.6% of GO). From this solution, composite membranes were formed using phase inversion method. It was observed that the GO addition influences the process of membrane formation and their physicochemical properties. The obtained membranes were subjected to microbiological tests using the Gram-negative bacteria (Escherichia coli), Gram-positive bacteria (Staphylococcuc aureus) and fungi (Candida albicans). It was observed that the GO addition to the cellulose membrane (GO/CEL) inhibited the growth of bacteria and fungi, and the biological activity as dependent on the type of living organism and the size of GO particles.

Opis:
In recent years, much research has focused on energy recovery from biomass as an alternative to fossil fuel usage. Microbial fuel cells (MFCs), which produce electricity via microbial decomposition of organic matter, are of great interest. The performance of an MFC depends on the electrode material; most often, carbon materials with good electrical conductivity and durability are used. To increase the power output of an MFC, the anode material can be modified to reduce the internal resistance and increase the anode surface area. Therefore, this study determined how modifying a carbon felt anode with reduced graphene oxide (rGO) and a combination of rGO with iron (III) oxide (rGO-Fe) affected electricity generation in an MFC fueled with wastewater. A mixed microbial consortium was used as the anode biocatalyst. The MFC-rGO-Fe produced significantly higher voltages than other cells (average 109.4 ± 75.1 mV in the cycle). Power density curves indicated that modifying the anode with rGO-Fe increased the power of the MFC to 4.5 mW/m2, 9.3- and 3.9-times higher than that of the control MFC and the MFC-rGO, respectively. Anode modification reduced the internal resistance of the cells from 1029 Ω in the control MFC to 370 and 290 Ω in the MFC-rGO and MFC-rGO-Fe, respectively. These results show that a mixture of rGO with iron (III) oxide positively affects electricity production and can be successfully used for anode modification in the MFCs fueled with wastewater.

Opis:
Due to their characteristics, sintered Cu-C composites are materials used in electrical equipment. These characteristics include high electrical conductivity, thermal conductivity and excellent resistance to abrasion. Currently, graphite nanopowder is used successfully as a carbon material. Metal-graphite, which is created on its basis, exists in different proportions of graphite to metal. A larger graphite content has a positive effect on smaller wear of commutators and rings. In contrast, a material with a higher copper content is used at high current densities. An example of such machines is a DC motor starter characterized by low voltage and large current. Tribological properties of Cu-C composites depend on the form of carbon they include. Owing to the capability to manufacture graphene, it has become possible to produce composites with its content. The present study tested the effect of a graphene oxide content on tribological properties in contact with steel. Tests were conducted on a ball-on-disk apparatus in conditions of dry friction. Microscopic observation was performed on the Hitachi SU70 field emission electron microscope. EDS analyses were performed using the Thermo Scientific X-ray Microanalysis system. Disk wear and surface geometrical structure parameters (SGP) of the samples after tribological tests were determined on the basis of measurements made on the Talysurf 3D contact profilometer from Taylor Hobson.

Nano-composites (Mn2O3, Mn2O3/graphene oxides (GO)) were prepared by a new method. The nano-composites were characterized by XRD and HRTEM. The catalytic performance of the nano-composites on the thermal decomposition of ammonium nitrate(V) (AN) was investigated by TG-DSC and TG-MS. The reaction of AN with the nano-composites in the condensed phase was investigated by RSFTIR. The results of TG-DSC experiments indicated that the nano-composites significantly catalyze the thermal decomposition of AN, especial Mn2O3/GO. The exothermic reaction of AN with Mn2O3/GO commenced at about 185 °C. Based on the TG-MS results, it was ascribed to N2O formation. In the RSFTIR experiments, the dissociation reaction and ionization reaction of AN were both detected. NOx formation at low temperature was also found. NH2 was directly oxidized by HNO3/NO3− at low temperature. The interaction between Mn2O3 and NH3 was detected according to DRIFT experiments. At elevated temperature, the functional groups of GO are destroyed, which had an influence on the interaction between Mn2O3 and GO. A probable mechanism for the exothermic reaction and then its disappearance is proposed. HNO3 gas was absorbed on the surface of solid AN, which can markedly catalyze the thermal decomposition of AN. Perhaps the HNO3 plays a key role in the exothermic reaction and then the reaction of AN disappears at very low temperatures.

Kretschmann-based surface plasmon resonance (K-SPR) is suitable for biomolecular sensing which provides label-free and quick detection results with real-time analysis. In this work, we have investigated the effect of graphene oxide (GO) with titanium dioxide (TiO2) thin films that are placed in hybrid above metal layers such as gold (Au), silver (Ag) and copper (Cu) with the presence of chromium (Cr) as an adhesive layer. The thickness of the Au, Ag and Cu metal thin films were optimized to 40, 30 and 30 nm, respectively, with a fixed thickness of GO of 2 nm and TiO2 of 1.9 nm. The sensing was evaluated for SPR excitation at three different visible wavelengths of 633, 670 and 785 nm. The performance of sensing was analyzed based on the reflectance intensity and full-width at half-maximum (FWHM) of the spectrum using the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method. The sensitivity was calculated for analyte sensing in dielectric mediums of air versus water. The sensitivity increment percentage (%∆S ) was determined when comparing analyte detection using Cr/metal and Cr/metal/GO/TiO2 sensor structures. The highest sensitivity of 94.51 deg/RIU was achieved for Cr/Cu/GO/TiO2 K-SPR sensor at 633 nm wavelength.

The most common way to determine the specific surface of materials is to utilise direct methods, such as the flow method and the adsorptive method with the implementation of the adsorption isotherm equations. In our work we used the Brunauer, Emmet and Teller (BET) equation for the nitrogen adsorption isotherm description. Our goal was to examine the influence of reducing agents on the specific surface area of reduced graphene oxide. Graphene oxide was reduced by thiourea dioxide, thiourea, ammonium thiosulfate and sodium hydrosulfite.
Do określania powierzchni właściwej materiałów najczęściej stosowane są metody bezpośrednie, takie jak metoda przepływowa oraz adsorpcyjna, w której wykorzystywane są równania izotermy adsorpcji. W naszej pracy do określenia powierzchni właściwej zredukowanego tlenku grafenu do opisu wyznaczonej izotermy adsorpcji azotu zastosowano równanie Brunauera, Emmeta i Tellera (BET). Celem niniejszej pracy było zbadanie wpływu substancji redukujących na wielkość powierzchni właściwej zredukowanego tlenku grafenu. Do badań użyto tlenku grafenu redukowanego dwutlenkiem tiomocznika, tiomocznikiem, tiosiarczanem amonu, oraz podsiarczynem sodu.

The ability of graphene oxide to effectively capture electrons, e.g. of porphyrins suggests the potential use of such materials in photovoltaics and molecular optoelectronics. This implies that further research of this group of molecular materials is very important from the point of view of their applications in diodes and transistors. The goal of the research was to create new hybrid systems with donor-acceptor properties, consisting of graphite oxide and porphyrin 5,10,15,20-Tetrakis (4-hydroxyphenyl) -21H, 23H-porphine. The resulting hybrid structure has been characterized by spectroscopic investigation in a wide spectral range from ultraviolet to infrared.

Flaky graphene oxide was activated with divinylsulfone followed by immobilization of the β-galactosidase enzyme. An active and stable preparation was obtained. β-galactosidase stability after immobilization was much higher than with the native enzyme. The half-life time of the immobilized enzyme was estimated as 165 hours, while for the native form, the estimate was only 5 hours. The developed procedure for the preparation of flaked graphene and its use in the chemical immobilization of enzymes can be used for any enzyme. A processing solution for continuous operation was proposed and verified using cow’s milk, with lactose as the hydrolysed substrate, as a dosing stream. Lactose, a milk sugar, was effectively hydrolysed. Product for allergy sufferers who cannot digest lactose has been obtained in this way.
