Fr. Ludwik Antoni Wojtyś was born in 1870 in Pacanów. After ordination to the priesthood in Rome he was chaplain in the Polish and Lithuanian missions in England and Scotland, and also worked among Poles who sought employment in Cape Town in South Africa. From around 1906 to 1923 he ministered to the Polish migrants in the United States. Here, thanks to his diligence and enterprise he made a fortune, purchasing large areas of land in Bridgeport, Connecticut. Upon returning to Poland, he contributed largely to the building of a Catholic secondary school in Kielce. For a short time he served as a pastor of the parishes in Suków and Chmielnik in the Kielce diocese. However, he felt he was treated unfairly in his native diocese, so in 1926 he left for Poznań where he settled and died three years later. There he started a foundation for indigent Polish writers but it actually never came into existence due to Polish bureaucracy and American  law.

Opis:
The article presents Rev. Władysław Wanags, a Marian priest,  and his achievements. He was born in Latvia, but most of his life spent in Soviet Ukraine working among the Catholics in  Podolia. As an adult, he experienced inner conversion, which resulted in the choice of the priestly life. After a brief ministry in Latvia, he was directed by the church authorities to work in Ukraine in 1971. He became famous for uncompromising nature and courage that won him the respect from the faithful and the local party apparatus. He worked strenuously and served the congregation at a time when the communist authorities fought with religion and obstructed pastoral work. Rev. Wanags became famous as a great builder. He initiated and often actively participated in building twenty new churches, twenty-nine parish houses, two buildings for the seminary, a house for the poor and the elderly. All these buildings were erected within 10 years. He also managed to restore nine historic churches which had been ruined for decades. Even now the churches erected by him are called "wanagsowe" because of their appearance.

Tematem niniejszego artykułu jest formacja organisty w diecezji koszalińsko-kołobrzeskiej w świetle przepisów kościelnych dotyczących tej kwestii. Autor postawił sobie za zadanie zaprezentować przepisy dotyczące przygotowania i posługi organisty oraz przykłady wprowadzenia ich w życie, m.in. przez założenie Diecezjalnego Studium Organistowskiego. Dla bardziej wnikliwego przebadania tej kwestii autor ułożył ankietę, na podstawie której w latach 2010/2011 zostały przeprowadzone badania w celu uzyskania bardziej szczegółowych informacji na temat pracy organisty. Autor żywi nadzieję, że podjęcie tematu formacji organisty przyczyni się do podniesienia poziomu i usunięcia ewentualnych nadużyć czy braków w tym względzie w diecezji koszalińsko-kołobrzeskiej.
The subject of this article is an organist’s formation in the Diocese of Koszalin-Kołobrzeg in the light of the law concerning this issue. The attempt is to present the diocese rules concerning the organists’ preparation and their ministry. Moreover, there are some examples that show the practical realization of these rules ( for example through the establishing of the Diocesan Study Centre for Organists) To reach this aim, questionnaires were framed to make possible to collect information about the ministry and formation of an organist in the Diocese of Koszalin-Kołobrzeg. The questionnaire was conducted in 2010/2011 among parish priests and organists. The author of this article hopes that the undertaken topic of an organists’ formation be, at least to some extent, helpful to better the organists’ qualifications and exclude, if necessary, all misuses or deficiency.

Niniejsze opracowanie przedstawia rozwój kultu Błogosławionych Męczenników z Pratulina. W pierwszej części artykułu zaprezentowano krótką historię procesu beatyfikacyjnego. Następnie autor omówił powstałe inicjatywy duszpasterskie związane z kultem Błogosławionych, m.in. powstanie Stowarzyszenia Pamięci Unitów Podlaskich „Martyrium” i Fundacji „Arka”, Diecezjalnej Rodziny Szkół im. Unitów Podlaskich oraz Bractwa „Strażnicy Kościoła”. W dalszej części artykułu zwrócono uwagę na rozwój sanktuarium pratulińskiego, liczne publikacje, wystawy, projekty filmowe poświęcone Unitom z Pratulina, a także uroczyste świętowanie kolejnych rocznic beatyfikacji. Wskazane inicjatywy i projekty są potwierdzeniem, że diecezja siedlecka zachowuje pamięć i rozwija duchowe dziedzictwo Unitów Podlaskich.
This study presents the development of the cult of the Blessed Martyrs of Pratulin. The first part of the article presents a short history of the process of beatification. Then the author discussed the pastoral initiatives related to the cult of the Blesseds, e.g. founding of the Memory Association of Pratulin Martyrs "Martyrium" and the "Arka" Foundation, the Diocesan Family of Schools identified with Martyrs of Podlasie and the Brotherhood "Guardians of the Church". In the further part of the article, attention is paid to the development of the Sanctuary of Pratulin, numerous publications, exhibitions, film projects dedicated to the Blessed Units of Podlasie, as well as the solemn celebration of beatification anniversaries. The indicated initiatives and projects confirm that the diocese of Siedlce preserves the memory and develops the spiritual heritage of the Blessed Martyrs of Podlasie.

There has been almost no source research on the books of benefice (libri beneficiorum) of Polish dioceses dating back to the end of the Middle Ages and the beginning of the early modern period in Polish historiography, the only exception being Jan Długosz’s book of benefice. Given the significance of these sources for studying a wide array of historical problems, the lack of research on those mentioned above is a serious omission. The article attempts to fill this gap, focusing on a text about the archdeaconry of Kalisz (the creation of this document, its storage and function) included in liber beneficiorum of the diocese of Gniezno, drawn up on the orders of Archbishop Jan Łaski in the 1520s and early 1530s. The paper is narrow in scope and only attempts to address certain basic issues. The study of the problems mentioned above was based on the well-known description of the archdeaconry of Kalisz and information from other sources: consistory and chapter records, and the other volumes of Jan Łaski’s Liber Beneficiorum, including the Łęczyca and Łowicz draft. In addition, other essential sources for the following study are the copies of the description relating to St Michael’s Parish in Dobrzec (currently part of Kalisz), coming from the hitherto unknown description of the Kalisz archdeaconry of the Gniezno Book of Benefice. These copies are discussed more extensively and their edition is included in the appendix. The article proposes hypotheses regarding the organization of work on Łaski’s book of benefice, the methods of the text’s preparation, and the function of the book over the first hundred years of its existence.
Badania źródłoznawcze nad księgami uposażeń beneficjów (libri beneficiorum) polskich diecezji z przełomu średniowiecza i czasów nowożytnych są właściwie nieobecne w polskiej historiografii. Jedynym wyjątkiem jest księga uposażeń autorstwa Jana Długosza. Sytuacja ta jest istotnym brakiem, wziąwszy pod uwagę znaczenie tych źródeł dla badania całego szeregu problemów historycznych. Niniejszy tekst stanowi próbę zmiany tego stanu. Przedmiotem artykułu jest analiza zagadnienia powstania, przechowywania i funkcjonowania tekstu opisu archidiakonatu kaliskiego z libri beneficiorum diecezji gnieźnieńskiej, spisanego z polecenia arcybiskupa Jana Łaskiego w ciągu drugiej i na początku trzeciej dekady XVI wieku. Tekst ma charakter przyczynkowy i stanowi próbę poruszenia pewnych podstawowych zagadnień. Studium wspomnianych problemów przeprowadzono na bazie powszechnie znanego tekstu opisu archidiakonatu kaliskiego, a także informacji z innych źródeł: zapisek konsystorskich, kapitulnych i porównania z innymi tomami księgi uposażeń Jana Łaskiego, w tym brudnopisem łęczycko-łowickim. Jednym ze źródeł i istotnym elementem studium jest wykorzystanie odpisów tekstu opisu parafii św. Michała w Dobrcu (obecnie część Kalisza), pochodzących z nieznanego dotychczas egzemplarza kaliskiej części gnieźnieńskiej księgi uposażeń. Z tego względu poświęcono im więcej miejsca i w aneksie opublikowano ich edycję. W artykule postawiono wstępne hipotezy co do organizacji prac przy zbieraniu informacji do księgi uposażeń Łaskiego, metod opracowania tekstu oraz funkcjonowania księgi w ciągu pierwszych 100 lat od jej sporządzenia.

Over the years from 16th century up to our times, Protestants, Catholics and Jews lived peacefully together in the region of Cieszyn Silesia. At the beginning of the third millenium one can follow the words of the Swiss Reformed theologian, Karl Barth, that “although we believe otherwise, we don’t belive in another God”. According the the words everybody’s religion and values must be respected. Cieszyn Sliesia has always been associated with everything what is Christian. For centuries it has been the cradle of faith and the love for God. Cieszyn, as the capital of the region, is a town in which ecumenism – not the theological, but the everyday, practical one – makes sense of people’s lives. Due to historical conditions, this land was rich in clergy and lay people for whom the welfare of other human beings, help for those in need, the social, economical and intellectual developement of the capital town were matters of overriding importance. Today – tradition, history, cultural and intellectual heritage connected with this town speak clearly to everybody. The inhabitants of this land value in a really special way the great gift of unity which was given to them in the spirit of God’s love. No social or cultural activity is impossible here thanks to the true engagement of Catholics and Protestants who are motivated by the idea of developement of this magic place. In Cieszyn Silesia, where “ecumenism is the matter of social life”, the ecumenical awarness is more and more promoted. It can easily be said that the region, in terms of its ecumenical activity in all its dimensions (spiritual, intellectual, pastoral and practical), could be a guiding light for Europe.

Tematem artykułu jest omówienie zachowanych fragmentów dwóch badań ankietowych przeprowadzonych w diecezji kieleckiej w latach 1930-1931, w kontekście wprowadzanej po I wojnie światowej odnowy życia religijnego na jej terenie. Podejmowane w tym zakresie działania po 1918 r. znalazły najpełniejszy wyraz w postanowieniach synodu diecezjalnego z 1927 r. Jednym z jego elementów było prowadzenie systematycznych obserwacji zmian społeczno-religijnych poprzez powołanie w kurii Komisji wiary i obyczajów, która miała czuwać nad realizacją odnowy synodalnej w diecezji. Między innymi na podstawie prowadzonych badań ankietowych miała ona wskazywać potrzeby w zakresie duszpasterstwa na poziomie całej diecezji i poszczególnych parafii. Jednak wraz z rozwojem ogólnopolskiego programu odnowy życia religijnego opartego na ponaddiecezjalnej organizacji, jaką była Akcja Katolicka, wcześniejszy lokalny projekt nie był kontynuowany, a omawiane dwa badania ankietowe stanowią jego najobszerniejsze, choć nie w pełni zachowane świadectwa.
This article reviews the preserved fragments of two questionnaire surveys conducted in the Kielce Diocese over the years 1930-1931 in the context of the religious renewal in that area after World War I. The measures implemented in this respect after 1918 were expressed to the fullest extend in the decisions of the diocesan synod of 1927. One of its elements was to systematically observe the socio-religious changes by appointing a Commission of Faith and Customs in the curia. It was supposed to supervise the implementation of the synodal renewal plan in the Diocese. On the basis of surveys and other instruments, it was to determine the needs in respect of pastoral care at the level of the entire Diocese and individual parishes. Upon the establishment of the Catholic Action, which had been developed as a supra-diocesan organisation aimed at conducting a nationwide programme of religious renewal, the earlier local project was not continued. Consequently, the two questionnaire surveys discussed herein, much as they had not been fully preserved, constitute the most extensive testimonies thereof.

The Polish version of the article was published in “Roczniki Humanistyczne,” vol. 57 (2009), issue 2. After Poland regained independence the role of priests’ deanery conferences gained more importance. Regular deanery conventions of the clergy positively influenced pastoral work, established order in it as well as unifying its goals and methods. They also played an important role in solving the problems of local priests concerning their living standards. The bishop appreciated the significance of deanery conferences, judging them to be an important element of the system of management and control of the diocese. In 1926, a diocesan director of pastoral conferences was appointed, his aim being, among others, to set subjects for discussion at such conventions. The conferences became an important instrument for finding out about priests’ opinions and their attitudes as well as for moulding them by the diocesan authorities.

The author discusses the issues concerning the social commitment of the clergy in the Diocese of Kielce, which were tackled in the publications of "Przegląd Diecezjalny" in the years 1917-1925. He draws attention to the appearance of new trends in this area at the end of World War I (those trends mainly came from the experience of the Catholic Church in the Prussian Partition) and the directions of their adjustment to the conditions in the Diocese of Kielce, which belonged to ecclesiastical and social tradition of the Congress Poland.

After Poland regained independence the role of decanal conferences of priests became more important. Regular conventions of decanal clergy positively influenced pastoral work, introduced order in it, unified its aims and methods of work. They also played an important role in solving the local priests' problems concerning their living standards. The bishop appreciated the significance of decanal conferences, perceiving an important element of the management system and control of the diocese in them. In 1926 a diocesan director of pastoral conferences was appointed, his aim being, among others, to set subjects for discussion at priests' conventions. The conferences became an important instrument for learning about priests' opinions and their attitudes as well as for shaping them by the diocese authorities.

Nach einer Zeit der Stagnation, ja Regression in der Entwicklung des Dekanatsnetzes auf dem Territorium der Diözese Kielce im 19. Jahrhundert erfolgte in den Jahren 1911-1925 dessen dynamische Entfaltung. Dies geschah in mehreren Etappen. Die erste betraf die Berufung von Vizedechanten im Rahmen ausgedehnter Kreisdekanate im Jahre 1911, darauf folgte 1918 die Umgestaltung der Vizedekanatsbezirke zu selbständigen Dekanaten, und der dritte Schritt bestand in der Reform der Dekanatsgrenzen in den Jahren 1919-1921. Im Ergebnis dieser Umgestaltungen wurde das Dekanatsnetz in der Diözese Kielce weitgehend der neuen sozialen und demographischen Situation angepasst und überdauerte so bis zur Reorganisation der Diözesengrenzen im Jahre 1925.

Opis:
The article discusses the changes which took place in the organisation of deaneries in the Diocese of Kielce in the years 1925-1939. These changes were caused by the necessity of adaptation to the new boundaries of the diocese which were introduced after the concordat of 1925 and the dynamic development of the city of Kielce. With regard to the creation of the deanery of Wiślica, the author presented the decision making process done by the administration of the diocese.
