Opis:
Maadi Town Temple was discovered by Prof. Villiano of Milan University in 1936, during excavation work in the Maadi Town area of the Fayoum Province. Since this discovery there has been no scientific ally based conservation of the monument, often than some unsuccessful restoration. The ruins were left uncovered and exposed to climatic deterioration until 1994, when scientific members of the Faculty of Archaeology of Cairo University undertook a study of the degradation processes affecting the Temple. This started with field-based observation of the monument's condition and, description of the building materials, (limestone and mortar). In 1997 samples of the building material were collected on site and in 1998 laboratory studies of those samples were carried out in the Department of Geomechanics at the Warsaw University. The laboratory studies comprised two main steps: diagnosis of the deterioration factors and their geomechanical interpretation as an effect of salt solution, water saturation and temperature changes. The behaviour of building limestone and mortar were considered relative to their mineralogical composition, internal structure and path of deformation. In laboratory testing two geomechanicalmethods were used: non- destructive ultrasonic control and destructive uniaxial compression testing with monitoring of prefailure and postfailure deformation fabrics. Both appliedmethods showed the salt solutions to be themain deterioration factor affecting the stone elements and the anisotropy and various properties of themortar and of the bedded limestone as themain factors destabilising the construction of the Temple as a whole. Degradation occurs gradually due to the internal and external inhomogeneous field of deformation caused by climatic changes, with cyclic strengthening due to salt incrustation and subsequent softening after water saturation and temperature changes.

GAS-WORKS
TECHNOLOGICAL MONUMENTS ( WIELKOPOLSKA)
Opis:
The titular gas-works are an example of technological monuments which have irreversibly become part of the past. The article discusses works which produced illuminating gas out of hard coal in the process of its degassing in a temperature of 900- 1300° C. The obtained gas, known also as town gas, was used for decades for lighting streets. In time, it was applied also in buildings and for household purposes - for heating water, ironing, heating interiors, etc, as well as in industry. The greatest development of this domain of gas engineering in Poland coincided with the second half of the nineteenth century and the first decade of the twentieth century. The oldest gas-works, established in 1847, are located in Wroclaw. The first gas-works in Greater Poland were opened in Poznan in 1856. The beginning of the 1970s marked the onset of a thirty-years long liquidation of unprofitable coal gas-works which polluted the natural environment. The development of a network of natural gas transmission lines was accompanied by the closure of successive works. The largest old gas-works complex is located in Poznan. The architecture of the objects, maintained In the so-called Rundbogenstill style, continues to be admired up to this day. Part of the objects, such as the gas holders and the Koppers furnaces, is no longer extant, while other buildings have been adapted for offices and storehouses; still others, such as the boiler-room, the water gas building (now a ruin) or the filter hall await adaptation. A culture centre is foreseen in the old gas-works complex. Some of the old gas-works in Greater Poland are no longer used (Pniewy, Krobia, Miejska Gorka or Rakoniewice). The difficulty with their adaptation lies in the fact that the walls of the production objects are strongly contaminated with toxic substances. Part of the objects is used as construction material warehouses (Pobiedziska, Lobzenica, Srem, Jarocin). In Jutrosin, Wolsztyn, and Nowy Tomysl redesigned gas-works serve as natural gas switching stations. The gas-works in Kornik (today: a switching station) are an example of a well revitalised object with emphasis placed on the beauty and harmony of industrial architecture. Several gas-works have been totally forgotten and pulled down, such as those in Swarzedz, Rawicz, and Chodziez. The state of the preservation of the objects is illustrated by a table. Coal gas-works are an important element of industrial heritage and testimony to the existence of a technology which for economic reasons has been relegated to the past.

Opis:
The article tackles the problem of the legal measures aiming to protect the cultural and historical heritage. The Legal act of 15th February 1962 on the Protection of the Goods of Culture and Museums, nevertheless novelized, still leaves the place  for improvement.  First of all, its definitions are not precise and legible (ex. evident cultural goods). Secondly, the supremacy of the state economy over cultural functions results in using the historical objects, nationalized after 1946, regardless their historical values. Thirdly, the museums’ deposits are endangered by lack of proper organization, since the emphasis is put on the expositional function of the museums and not on the other important functions as: storage, conservation and inventorying, cataloguing and gathering documentation.  Moreover, the role of the museums is often underestimated, both by the government and by the public. The Law of 26th April 1984 on popularisation of culture and culture popularising employees’ rights and obligations determines the educative role of museums, but the main problem identified is lack of financial and infrastructural resources. The space of the museums is too small to accommodate both the exhibitions and storage of goods and insufficient salaries are not motivating the employees to devote to their work. What’s more, the main, national museums are overcrowded, while the local ones are empty. The significant for the museum’s proper operating is evaluation of possessed pieces of art. The criteria taken into account during the evaluation process are listed and analysed in the further part of the article.  Among them we find: historical (basing on age and hence rarity), artistic (strictly connected with the sense of beauty), scientific (being potential objects of research), cultural (importance for cultural heritage and social growth) and material (value measurable in means of payment) value. Other  question raised in the article, is extremely extended protection of every good that is considered to have a museum value. In practice, it causes the prohibition of export of every good produced before the 9th May 1945, regardless its real value, without special licence obtained from the Minister of Culture and Art. It concerns also goods owned by private persons. The conclusion of the article highlights that public administration may interfere in culture only in a very limited sphere and it is essential to create self-managing local museums. The second conclusion is the public law’s influence should be limited to the regulation of the management problems, testing of employees and experts and the responsibility for the treasure owned by public institutions.

The article presents major monuments on the track of Old Polish Industrial District and also three tracks where postindustrial structures were found. The first example is Technology Monuments track of Silesia Region, where there are managed rationally particular buildings thanks to the engagement of many persons and institutions. The second instance is the industrial art monuments being for many years under professional care and patronage of Technology Museum in Warsaw. The third example is a situation when regional authorities and conservation services do not feel obliged to take care of unique postindustrial buildings on their own area, although they have full awareness of their historical wealth. There is not enough sense of care possible to make proper maintenance and rational use of so called lasting ruin, the example of which is the nineteenth-century construction of blast-furnace “Josef” in Samsonow.

The subject of the article is the analysis of the legal issue concerning the extent to which voivodeship conservators of monuments are bound by the determinations of local land use plans when issuing conservation permits as specified in Art. 36 of the Act on the Protection and Care of Historical Monuments. The need for such an analysis arises from the difficulty in establishing the legal regime in the case of overlapping forms of protection of immovable monuments, namely their registration and the arrangements from the land use plan. The subject matter addressed has the objective of specifying the rules of interpretation which will help standardize the practice of the administrative authorities in this respect.

Opis:
In Polish conditions and relatively poor condition of public finances, funding protection of monuments is also made with a significant share of funds from the European Union A good example of such is the funding under the Regional Operational Programmes of individual provinces. This article attempts to present the role of Regional Operational Program in the system of financing the protection of monuments in Poland, activities related to the protection of cultural heritage and to present the project of monument protection funded by Regional Operational Program of the Opole Voivodeship. The cultural heritage of a nation in the form of material and intangible heritage of previous generations is a key to building national identity, because without it teaching respect for tradition and culture would be impossible. However, in a market economy cultural heritage in the form of monuments should be treated also as a factor supporting regional development. Presented policy on the use of funds for activities related to the protection of cultural heritage, protection of monuments and the funds allocated for this purpose that EU funds, especially the Regional Operational Program, will not replace the system of financing these activities from public funds, which is administered by the Minister of Culture and National Heritage, but they can be a good complement to this system.

Opis:
The article discusses the possibilities of deploying multi-semiotic tools of (non) remembrance in contemporary urban spaces. The challenges of such deployment are discussed in the context of sociological and social-theoretical reflection on the urban human condition and the urban space as well as on the role of monuments in traditional pathways of urban remembering. Departing from the latter, I argue for new forms of commemoration and remembrance, especially via the so-called counter-monuments that constitute contemporary artists’ discursive response towards hegemonic narratives and practices of memory-making. As an example of countermonumental remembrance in contemporary urban spaces, I analyse Gunter Demnig’s famous Stolpersteine (stumbling-block) installations. Commemorating the Holocaust and placed across several major European cities, the Stolpersteine constitute a very prominent example of counter-monuments that both undermine the long lasting narrations of the urban history as well as propose new, ‘lived’ as well as dialogic format of dealing with the urban’s problematic pasts.

The goal of the work defined by the artist was to create living monuments of the Holocaust and to propose the changes in the dynamics of Polish-German relations. In the article, I propose interpreting Surowiec’s work through the symbolic role of birches in the history of Polish culture and environmental history of the Holocaust. Such interpretation reveals the ambiguity of the gesture of replanting trees, the inability to classify it as an act of giving responsibility to the Germans or Polish-German reconciliation.

Opis:
In Poland the computer - a symbol of the twenty first century - has an almost fifty-years long history. The year 2004 marked half a century from the building of the first Polish analogue computer, and the year 2008 will coincide with the fiftieth anniversary of the construction of a Polish digital computer. For more than thirty years the Museum of Technology in Warsaw has been collecting and protecting monuments of electronic calculation technology - machines and assorted documentation (technical instructions, catalogues and advertisements). The most valuable exhibits in the Museum collections include the ZAM-21 computer, the Odra-1002, -1003 and -1013 machines, the MERA 7900 system and the Meritum micro-computer, equipment constructed by engineer Karpinski: AKAT-I, KAR-65, the K-202 mini-computer as well as a differential equation analyser. The collections also feature foreign computers (such as the American NCR 315, the National-Elliott computer set, external tape memory/CarouselI produced by the Swedish firm FACIT, the first IBM personal computers, Commodore and Atari, and the T3E super computer made by Cray). The exhibits are conserved by specialists from the Museum workshop which restores their original appearance and puts them into working order. An unprecedented dynamic growth of technology has made it urgent to examine the origin of the computer, computer techniques, and paths of development.
