Opis:
The aim of the study has been to assess the efficiency of choline-stabilized orthosilic acid (ch-OSA; bioavailabile form of silicon) application under increasing intensity of manganese stress on the chemical composition of plants and yielding of tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill. cv. Alboney F1 and cv. Emotion F1). Plants were grown in rockwool with the application of a nutrient solution of the following chemical composition (mg dm-3): N-NH4 2.2, N-NO3 230, P 50, K 430, Ca 145, Mg 65, Cl 35, S-SO4 120, Fe 2.48, Zn 0.50, Cu 0.07; pH 5.50, EC 3.00 mS cm-1. The following manganese levels in the nutrient solution were tested (mg dm-3): 9.6 and 19.2. The effect of ch-OSA application (at a concentration of Si equal 0.3 mg dm-3 of the nutrient solution) was investigated at both Mn-levels. The ch-OSA application alleviated Mn toxicity by increasing the biomass production in the Mn-low variant (+ 8.2% for Alboney F1 and 16.8% for Emotion F1, the differences being significant for Emotion F1), whereas the ch-OSA application in the Mn-high variant did not influence the plant yielding. All the factors affected the plant nutrient status and the chemical composition of tomato fruits. The chemical composition of leaves depended on (means of all the studied combinations): Mn (K, Na) and ch-OSA nutrition (N, Mg, Na), cultivar (for P, K, Ca, Na), but in the case of fruits significant differences were found between Mn (N, P, Ca, Mg) and ch-OSA nutrition (N, Mg, Na) and cultivar (N, P). In both Mn-levels, visual symptoms of manganese toxicity appeared on plants – in the Mn-high variant, they were observed after 4 weeks, while in the case of the Mn-low variant - after 10 weeks of exposure to strong Mn-stress. Treatment with ch-OSA at both of the studied Mn levels did not prevent the development of visual toxicity symptoms on the plants.

Opis:
The sequence of anatomical and ultrastructural events leading to the syncytium development in tomato roots infected with Globodera rostochiensis was examined. The syncytia were preferentially induced in cortical or pericyclic cells in the elongation zone of root. They developed towards the vascular cylinder by incorporation of new cells via local cell wall breakdown. After surrounding primary phloem bundle and reaching xylem tracheary elements syncytia spread along vascular cylinder. Roots in primary state of growth seemed to be the best place for syncytium induction as syncytia formed in the zone of secondary growth were less hypertrophied. At the ultrastructural level syncytial elements were characterized by strong hypertrophy, breakdown of central vacuole, increased volume of cytoplasm, proliferation of organelles, and enlargement of nuclei. On the syncytial wall adjoining vessels the cell wall ingrowths were formed, while the syncytial walls at interface of phloem were considerably thickened. They lacked of functional plasmodesmata and did not form any ingrowths. Using immunofluorescent-labelling and immunogold-labelling methods tomato expansin 5 protein was localized in nematode infected roots. The distribution of LeEXP A5 was restricted only to the walls of syncytia. The protein distribution pattern indicated that LeEXP A5 could mediates cell wall expansion during hypertrophy of syncytial elements.

Opis:
The aim of the study was to investigate the delayed ripening caused by the nor gene and its possible interaction with selected traits observed in two combinations, namely, Dw₄ x nor and C36 x nor. The lines Dw₄ and C36 differed from each other in the majority of examined characters. There was no significant effect of reciprocal crosses on these characters (total yield, number of fruits, fruit weight, locule number, earliness and fruit shelf life). In Dw₄ x nor fruit weight was inherited with incomplete dominance of small fruit, while in C36 x nor the inheritance proved to be intermediate. This important statement made it possible to distinguish the hybrids characterised by fruit weight intermediate in relation to the parental forms. The experiments attested to the high significance of additive effects for fruit weight, periods from sowing to ripening and from flowering to ripening in both combinations and for locule number in Dw₄ x nor. It was also found that the nor gene slightly delayed the onset of fruit ripening but did not affect such traits as total yield, number and weight of fruits, locule number and period from sowing to flowering. In its homozygous state the nor gene totally inhibited fruit ripening. However, as a heterozygote it revealed an intermediate action, slowing down fruit ripening and prolonging shelf life 2-3 times as compared with standard tomato. The expression of the nor gene was also found to be dependent on the genetic background. Line C36 positively influenced the flavour and firmness of hybrid fruits, while Dw₄ had a negative effect on fruit quality.

Opis:
Four tomato cultivars Macarena F₁, Faustine F₁, Cathy F₁ and Fanny F₁ were used in the study. Transplants were grown in a greenhouse. Seeds were sown at the end of March. The plants were grafted on Maxifort F₁ rootstock on April 5, 6 and 21 in the years 2006, 2007, 2008 without the use of biostimulators. In the case of the other combinations each year the following treatments with biostimulators were performed: watering with Goteo 0.1% solution (twice – 4 and 2 weeks before planting and three times after planting at three-week intervals), spraying with BM 86 0.1% solution (four times every three weeks starting at the blooming of the first cluster). In the control combination plants were untreated with biostimulators and were not grafted. Physical properties were determined and sensory analysis of tomato fruit was performed. The results showed that there was no significant influence of the applied preparations on the a*/b* value of fruits which depended mostly on the cultivars. The highest fruit firmness was obtained with BM preparation and in Faustine F₁ and Cathy F₁ cultivars. There was no significant influence of the preparations on sensory quality of fruits. Variability in sensory quality of fruits rather depended on the analyzed cultivars than on the investigated combination.
Do badań wzięto cztery odmiany pomidora wysokorosnącego: Macarena F₁, Faustine F₁, Cathy F₁ i Fanny F₁. Rozsadę przygotowywano w szklarni. Nasiona wysiano w końcu marca. Rośliny szczepiono na podkładce wegetatywnej Maxifort F₁ w następujących terminach: 5, 6 kwietnia 2006 r., 2007 r. i 21 kwietnia 2008 r. Rośliny szczepione nie były traktowane biostymulatorami. W pozostałych kombinacjach w każdym roku uprawy wprowadzono biostymulatory: Goteo 0,1% dwukrotne podlewanie 4 i 2 tygodnie przed posadzeniem rozsady i trzykrotne w odstępach trzytygodniowych po posadzeniu roślin.
