Intertextuality seems to be Alan Moore’s trademark. In his most famous comic books and graphic novels, such as V for Vendetta, Watchmen, Lost Girls or The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, he often refers to other texts of high and low culture. Therefore, a certain level of cultural competence is required to decode various messages hidden by the British writer. In V for Vendetta intertextuality is employed to convey certain political and ideological messages in a more subtle and indirect way. Through various allusions and quotations, Moore presents his views on the condition of the depicted society as well as on the political clash between a fascist state and its anarchist enemy. Intertextual references are also included in the graphics of the comic book. It is the aim of this paper to discuss if, how and to what extent intertextuality can influence the complexity of the graphic novel’s message and be used to indirectly convey particular political and social ideas.

Fenomen szczęścia stanowi problem dla etyki z dwóch powodów. Po pierwsze, utrudnia sformułowanie jednorodnych sądów moralnych dla dwóch lub więcej działań, które wydają się do siebie podobne w każdym moralnie istotnym aspekcie, z wyjątkiem niektórych udanych lub niefortunnych zdarzeń, które mają miejsce w jednym przypadku, a w drugim nie. Wystąpienie tych zdarzeń nie było pod kontrolą żadnego z agentów, ale dla zewnętrznych obserwatorów wydaje się być podstawą bardziej rygorystycznego lub bardziej tolerancyjnego osądu moralnego w jednym przypadku, a w drugim nie. Po drugie, szczęście może wpłynąć na nasze poczucie sensu życia poprzez sukces lub porażkę naszych ważnych egzystencjalnie projektów życiowych. Fakt ten sugeruje konieczność moralnie dopuszczalnych warunków polegających na szczęściu w formułowaniu i realizacji własnego projektu życiowego. W niniejszym artykule przedstawiam możliwości zastosowania głównych poglądów na szczęście do rozwiązania powyższych problemów.
The phenomenon of luck poses a problem for ethics for two reasons. First, it makes it difficult to formulate homogeneous moral judgments for two or more actions which seem to be similar to each other in every morally relevant aspect except of some successful or unfortunate events that take place in one case and not in the other. The occurrence of these events wasn’t under control of any of the agents but for external observers it tends to be the basis for more rigorous or more tolerant moral judgment in one case and not in the other. Second, luck can affect our sense of life through success or failure of ours existentially important life projects. This fact suggests necessity of conditions for morally permissible relying on luck in formulating and pursuing one’s life project. In this paper I present possibilities of applying main views on luck to resolve the above problems.

Bioconservative view holds that we should prevent dissemination of biomedical inteventions enhancing human capacities. One of arguments against this view shows that it is based on status quo bias which gives unjustified preference for actual state of affairs. According to this argument reasons against human enhancement are not conclusive. The aim of this article is to show the possibility of the interpretation of the bioconservative view, under which it is possible avoiding the status quo bias objection.

The article is concerned with the possibility of formulating moral judgments with respect to actions whose results may influence the quality of life, existence, number and identity of the future people. Because of the problems connected with defining the addressees and the reasons of responsibility for future generations on the ground of the ethical theories existing now, new theories are formulated on the basis of the so-called impersonal or personal premises. According to the impersonal theories moral evaluations are based on the final assessment of all the effects of the action, whose total value may be defined as a positive or negative state of affairs. According to the representatives of personal theories, the question whether an action has a beneficial or a harmful effect on the addressee of the action, is the main criterion of the moral evaluation. Since there is no satisfactory justification for the responsibility for the future generations, both in personal and impersonal theories argumentation is analyzed that is based on a predicted responsibility for the people who will exist in the future.

Vietnam War is one of the most traumatic experiences in contemporary history of the United States. This cold war conflict is constantly present in American popular culture. It became the theme of numerous pieces of literature, music, film (documentary as well as fiction), of computer games and comics. The aim of Wojciech Lewandowski’s chapter Seven Little Words. The Image of Vietnam War in a comic book “Preacher” by Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon is to present the Vietnam War in contemporary popular culture as exemplified in the comic book Preacher by writer Garth Ennis and artist Steve Dillon, issued between 1995 and 2000. The writer of the series, renowned for his love of war stories, spins the tale of this conflict with extraordinary attempts at avoiding the old clichés, while incorporating the typical elements of the Vietnam War narration. These include the knowledge of the battlefields, relations between soldiers and the morale, impact of the war on the psyche of soldiers, the image of the enemy, the motif of patrolling the jungle and the issue of the difficult return to the home country. The authors, referring to the above mentioned themes of the typical tale of the war in Indochina, created a touching image of a soldier’s life in Vietnam and after the return home. Their story is abundantly inspired by earlier film and comics portraits of the Vietnam conflict as well as by classical war tales. Preacher by Ennis and Dillon, in its issues dealing with Vietnam War is an intriguing study of the individual fate of people impacted by participating in a publicly perceived controversial and immoral war. It vividly exposes how individual lives change when influenced by traumatic experiences and indicates the values that enable one to survive the hell of the war.

Większość konsekwencjalnych i deontologicznych interpretacji zasady fiat iustitia, ruat coelum nie pozwala na stosowanie jej do rozstrzygania praktycznych problemów. Artykuł przedstawia propozycję takiej interpretacji, przy której zasada ta może służyć jako reguła praktyczna. Interpretacja ta zakłada, że fiat iustitia, ruat coelum stosuje się do ostatecznych decyzji, które wpływają na ocenę całego życia podmiotu lub ludzkości. Sukces tej interpretacji zależy od tego, czy brak moralnie dopuszczalnych możliwości uniknięcia indywidualnej lub globalnej katastrofy może stanowić rację do jej zaakceptowania.
Most of the consequential and deontological interpretations of the fiat iustitia, ruat coelum principle, do not allow treating it as a basis for resolving practical problems. This article presents a proposal for an interpretation, under which this principle can serve as a practical rule. This interpretation assumes that fiat iustitia, ruat coelum applies to the final decision that affects the assessment of the entire life of the agent or humanity. Success of this interpretation depends on whether the lack of morally permissible possibilities to avoid individual or global catastrophe may serve as a reason for accepting it.

Od wejścia w życie rozporządzenia 1/2003 1 stosowanie traktatowych reguł ochrony konkurencji na rynku wewnętrznym jest zdecentralizowane. Krajowe organy ochrony konkurencji powinny przejąć część obowiązków związanych z egzekwowaniem postanowień Traktatu o funkcjonowaniu Unii Europejskiej w zakresie prawa antymonopolowego, by zapewnić ich skuteczność na szczeblu krajowym. Jak wynika ze sprawy AT.40208 International Skating Union prowadzonej przez Komisję Europejską, działalność organów krajowych w odniesieniu do sportu może być polem doświadczalnym w kwestii oceny niektórych praktyk międzynarodowych federacji sportowych i krajowych związków sportowych pod kątem zgodności z prawem unijnym. Z tego względu działania podejmowane wobec jednego krajowego związku sportowego przez krajowy organ ochrony konkurencji mogą być przedmiotem zainteresowania dla innych takich organów w innych państwach członkowskich UE i dla Komisji oraz przyczyniać się do ustanowienia ogólnounijnego standardu stosowania art. 101 i art. 102 TFUE do sportu. W tym kontekście aktualna działalność Prezesa Urzędu Ochrony Konkurencji i Konsumentów (dalej: UOKiK) może stać się wzorem lub punktem odniesienia dla przyszłych kierunków rozwoju tego obszaru stosowania prawa konkurencji w całej UE. Niniejszy artykuł przedstawia analizę bieżącej działalności UOKiK w wymiarze stosowania prawa konkurencji do ligi koszykówki i związanych z tym problemów prawnych, także w porównawczym kontekście międzynarodowym.

Artykuł dotyczy doświadczenia moralnego podmiotu pozostającego poza siecią bliskich relacji. Analizuję dwie reguły niezależności moralnej, które mogłyby świadczyć o uprzywilejowaniu podmiotu w tego rodzaju sytuacjach. Zgodnie z pierwszą podmiot pozostający poza siecią relacji unika zagrożeń związanych z utożsamieniem z rolą społeczną. Zgodnie z drugą działania podejmowane przez podmiot charakteryzują się wyższym stopniem bezinteresowności, a co za tym idzie – większą wartością moralną. Argumentuję, że reguły te mogą mieć jedynie charakter prima facie i są ograniczone wieloma czynnikami. Wskazuję również, że uprzywilejowanie podmiotu moralnego w sytuacji cudzoziemca jest równoważone przez trudności w działaniu moralnym w obszarze obietnic, praktyki obwiniania oraz współodpowiedzialności i troski.
In this paper I examine the moral experience of an agent who remains outside the network of close relationships. I analyze two rules of moral independence that might indicate that the agent is morally privileged in such situations. According to the first, an agent outside the relational network avoids the risks associated with identification with a social role. According to the second, the actions taken by the agent are characterized by a higher degree of selflessness and, therefore, have higher moral value. I argue that these rules can only have a prima facie nature and are constrained by many factors. I also show that the privileged position of the moral agent in the foreigner's situation is counterbalanced by difficulties in moral action in the areas of promises, blaming, shared responsibility and care giving.
