The text is a review of the Dariusz Śnieżko’s book Kompleksja literatury. Studia staropolskie (The Complexion of Literature. Old-Polish Studies) (TAiWPN UNIVERSITAS, Krakow 2019). The only serious doubt regards the sound of the title (readers might not know the word “complexion”). Kompleksja literatury is a fascinating book. For whom? – certainly students of Old-Polish literature (and it will be also inspiring for scholars of the next historical and literary epochs). What? – revealing the most important dimensions of Old-Polish literature. Why? – because in works published so far the scant use of source texts proves to be representative of the most general material remaining of Old-Polish literature in its intertwining of anthropology and dialectics of orality and literacy.

The Polish version of the article was published in “Roczniki Humanistyczne,” vol. 56 (2008), issue 1. The paper is a hidden polemic with the texts that have recently been published (not quoted by their names or indicated in the footnotes). These texts have brought forth a diagnosis that there is a delay in terms of methodology with regard to the studies on Old-Polish literature and have postulated their application to the studies on ancient literature. The author formulates her belief that traditional philology is indispensable in the studies on Old-Polish literature with an awareness that there should be a free choice in selecting the method of its interpretation. The text emerges from a protest against the rhetoric of methodological directives formulated under the influence of fashion, ideology, or fatigue with the object of research and from radical distrust to methodological directives as such, and the majority of directives in general.

Opis:
Echo is the genre of the Old Polish poetry which appeared in the first decade of the 17th century. Its structure is based on the element commonly used in the literary function: the acoustic phenomenon of repeating the voices resonated from an obstacle. In poems the order of the rhymed elements functioned as this obstacle. Three varieties of this genre have been separated so far, including the one neglected by the scholars. The existence of the variants confirms the fact that echo is a kind of conceptual poetry in which folk element is of the utmost importance and is subortinated to underlining the satirical or critical overtone of the poem. The article deals with all the available in print works, both in Polish and Latin, which belong to this genre. It was noticed that echo had been useful and therefore was often practised in political poetry. The use of this genre was a good method to compromise the opponents as it would indicate their craftiness, bad intentions and immorality. Ath the same time it protected the ideological allies by evoking the readers’ sympathy towards them. It was also a manifestation of baroque poetry with the use of puns and surprising changes of meaning.

This paper presents the images of women in European culture and Old Polish Literature. The works devoted to women from the Middle Ages to Baroque focused on their social and political duties or artistic creation. The authors chose different literary forms: chronicles, poems, epigrams, laments, odes, sonnets, or epic works. The created characters included: a saint, a beloved lady, a donna angelicata, a hero of a chronicle or an autobiography. The works described their life, creative activity, or artistic aspirations. Some of them are panegyric poems, religious works, meditations, or love poetry. Women with an amazing sense of observation were discovering the space of literature and were participating in a world in its dynamic changes. They were excellent creators of humanistic and religious literature, referring to ancient tradition and European values.

Opis:
The article presents four research methods that find application in the study of literary works written by Polish Protestants in the Old Polish epoch. The first one is a reconstruction of the theological (religious, ethical) programme of the writers who openly declare that they are Evangelicals or Anti-Trinitarians. What serves as a liminal case are funeral works about high-ranking people and addressed to Christians in general – here Protestant writers use the principle of denominational modesty, although in the terms of inventio their rhetoric is different from that of Catholics. The second method consists in examining the religious background of ludic works (e.g. epigrams) from the perspective of cultural hermeneutics – an analysis of symbolism, and historical and moral references. A researcher must go even deeper when analysing parenteral or didactic works addressed to general readers and promoting the Protestant ethos, usually in a subtle and consistent manner. The fourth method is usually used when studying anonymous poems (from the 17th century) or those in which the religious declaration is vague. These texts can be successfully examined using the philological method of tracking phrases from denominational Bibles and songs from popular Protestant hymn-books (“biblical and song pebbles” inlaid into the mosaic of the work). Yet, the researcher also needs to pay attention to subtle theological allusions (sometimes in Aesopian speech) that are characteristic of Protestantism.

“Traditional” or “Modern”? Methodological Dilemmas of the Contemporary Researchers of Old Polish Literature. Part One: General Remarks and the Case of Postcolonial CriticismThis paper shows the personal reflection of its authors upon the methodological contexts of cultural and literary studies concerning Old Polish literature. Especially those contexts that eagerly and sophisticatedly – though quite superficially – apply the so called “modern” literary theories to the analyses and interpretations of Old Polish texts and – at the same time – disregard their very historical backgrounds. The authors present a fairly sceptical approach towards the blind and unjustifiable, although fashionable, application of “modern” criticism in the given field of research. Instead they emphasise the contextual, secondary character of the possible modern theoretical implications, as  well as the particular, specific character of Old Polish writings. Moreover, wider social factors influencing the methodological decisions taken by the academic community in question (who undoubtedly still favour the traditional, philological method of research and strongly distances itself from the contemporary theoretical thought) have been discussed in great detail. The enclosed analysis of the recent controversial book Fantomowe ciało króla (The Phantom Body of a King, 2011) by Jan Sowa, which deals with the Old Polish history, society, and culture, strongly influenced by the application of modern criticism, in particular the postcolonial part of it, served both as an example of the authors’ argumentation and, at the same time, a warning.

Opis:
The work presents topoi, which was emerged as a result of analysis of 16th century works, propagating personal patterns and formulating advisable recommendation. In the dissertation the author worked on estimating the generation borders and division into types according to age criterion that had been conducted in antiquity. Also, it was tried to interprete a part of Epistula ad Pisones by Horacy, a few philosophical treatises by Ciceron: "Cato maior de senectute" and "De oficiis", as well as some passages from "Moriae encomium" by Erazm from Rotterdam. The constant semantic-logical constructions were appointed as a result of research reconnaisance in the 16th century Polish literature. The sems about young and old age were being looked for in works: "Żywot człowieka poczciwego" by M. Rej, "Dworzanin polski" by Ł. Górnicki, O poprawie Rzeczypospolitej by A. Frycz Modrzewski and other pedagogical, renaissance works. From parenetic literature works it was able to appoint topoi of “irrational young age” and “wise old age” and their opposite variants. From the analysis concerning educational hints it was also emerged the outline o f a qualitative topos “a boy like an old man” . What is more the author appointed contracts to topos “young age” - “old age” formal-contextual forms. In some works it is easy to observe the contamination of topos “ irrational old age” with a topos “the life as a sailing” as well as crossing of topoi “young age” - “old age” with the conception “the biological wheel of life.” In the dissertation linguistic-stylistic, the realization of these works were taken into consideration. They are wery often based on a listing rule. In the 16th century parenetic works there are also topoi with the comparison or allegory form.
