Opis:
The article contains two parts. In the first, the Author describes the theoretical background for analysing the photographs by an American controversial artist – Joel-Peter Witkin; the analysis is carried out in the second part of the paper. The realistic, authenticity-oriented visions of W. Benjamin, R. Barthes or S. Sontag are confronted with Witkin’s creativeness spirit – clearly manipulating in matters of the order of reality (and its rules of appearance) and photographical stuff. This attitude is supported by François Soulages’ views on aesthetics.

Opis:
The Book of Joel abounds in the descriptions of God’s mighty acts, including his interventions in the workings of nature and the unfolding historical events in the life of Israel and the so-called heathen nations. It has long been recognized that these acts are important in structuring the book as a whole. They can be labelled as negative or positive for the life of Israel, depending on which part of the book we interpret. In the final form of the work there is a centreline between its two major parts (1:1–2:17; 2:19–4:21), separating the descriptions of divine punishment and lament from the accounts of restoration and joy when it comes to the relationship of the covenant community with God: “Then the Lord became jealous for his land, and had pity on his people” (Joel 2:18). This verse also serves as an introduction to 2:19–4:21. What has not yet been examined in detail, however, is that the descriptions of God’s working in the nations’ history and in nature can help read the book from the viewpoint of trauma/crisis and tenacity. In the midst of crises Israel’s only hope is to repent and turn to the Lord to have mercy. In repentance, the prophet’s resilience and compassion is also significant; his words are handed down to us in a form that resembles the terminology, mood and theological teaching of certain lament psalms of the Hebrew Bible, yet representing the tradition of the day of the Lord especially important in prophetic literature. This paper aims at investigating the Book of Joel from the perspective of trauma and tenacity with a view to the scriptural allusions the author employs.

Joel Jansen Aesthetic Identity and the Discourse of Cultural Greyout Taking as a departure point the case of illegal mass-reproduction of an image painted by an Australian Aboriginal artist, Joel Jensen explores the relationship between culture, art and identity. He points to the threat referred to as "cultural greyout," i.e. the inability to reproduce the identities of the past due to the contemporary mass-production of artefacts in which those identities are reflected. Jensen follows Arthur Danto's view that mass reproduction changes the conveyed meaning of an artwork and, by being distributed as a commodity within the dominating society, poses a threat to the identity of the community in which the artefact was created since the history of an artwork, i.e. the circumstances that determine the artwork's creation and distribution, contribute to its aesthetic characteristics. These, in turn, remain formative for the construction of the community's identity.

Opis:
Szymon Szymonowic's Ioel Propheta, dedicated to Pope Clement VIII, is the second example, aside to Jan Dantyszek's Ionas Propheta, of the Polish-Latin Biblical poetry in the sixteenth century, a poetry that imitated the prophetic books of the Old Testament. The poetic paraphrases of the biblical books in the Renaissance are a particular and frequent type of writing, although the Renaissance literary theory was rather not occupied with this phenomenon and the majority of authors of poetical theories keep silent about paraphrase. The paper quotes in short what the ancient (Quintilian and Cicero) and Renaissance (Erasmus of Rotterdam and Nicodemus Frischlin) authors said as regards the essence and function of paraphrase. These authors emphasize the emulative character of literary paraphrases, and aemulatio is one of the basic (apart to imitatio) principles of poetic writing, those that were binding in the Renaissance. Quintilian quotes two very general ways of paraphrasing: breviare, that is summary, abbreviation of the original text, and exornare – ornament (which most often is also a development of the text under paraphrase). Giving a new literary form to the well-known biblical themes, one may be free in selecting proportions, skillfully laying emotional stresses and thus making use of paraphrase for an appropriate goal. Prophecy as a literary genre has been found to be similar to speech, in particular to genus deliberativum, the essence of the oratory style being, according to Quintilian and Cicero, amplification and ornamentation. One can see therefore, that amplification is a characteristic feature of both speech and paraphrase. Our analysis of Szymonowic's work shows that the poet extended the theme from the Bible through his amplification in the stylistic layer. In the work Ioel Propheta by Szymonowic the amplification serves to characterize a figure, and expresses various feelings. Above all, it has been used to demonstrate the author's workshop skill, and thereby to evoke the reader's admiration for his talent and erudition. The evident particular amplification of some parts of Joel's prophecy can make us assume that it was caused by a definite goal, for which Szymonowic made his paraphrase. This goal was to direct Pope Clement VIII's attention to danger that threatened Christian Europe on the part of the Turkish empire. This is not, however, a kind of persistent anti-Turkish propaganda. For sure, Szymonowic's work, especially his dedication of the initial part, is also a panegyric to honour Pope Clement VIII. Thus, apart from imitative and emulative effort, one may stress in Szymonowic his skilful use of paraphrase to broaden the interpretative range of a work.

Opis:
This article considers the appeal of the cute body and its ambiguous relationship with the lovable. While cuteness is an aesthetic that is subjectively determined and expressed, it can also embellish a body with features that are standardized by systems of commodification. The cute body possesses a diminutive and vulnerable charm, but it is also an object that is augmented to solicit the subject’s love and control. Hence, the aesthetic of cuteness may seem to disempower the object, but it is likewise, an acute seduction that bears witness to the craft or technē that captures the subject. Developing a framework for cuteness as a stylistic device or technology embedded in the subject-object relationship, the article argues that the qualities and experience of the lovable constitute a condition of the affected subject, who must bear the paradox of embracing and effacing the object’s difference.
