In this article one can find the methodological sketch of Fundamental Ecclesiology, in particular: the former lines of this discipline, main concepts, ‘side' sciences, subject, goal and functions and, particularly, methods. This sketch is based on mostly Polish literature which is not ‘large’ but consists important solutions. These solutions ought to be unifed which was one of the aims of this article. The other one was to offer some new propositions, in particular: Fundamental Ecclesiology as Integral Ecclesiology, closer unification of the subjects of Fundamental Ecclesiology and Fundamental Christology and the proper methods of Fundamental Ecclesiology. Trying to use more proper methods some new inspirations found in John Paul II’s teaching could help. In His teaching there is a sketch of three new methods useful in Fundamental Ecclesiology: historical-revelational, contextual-revelational and extracontextual-revelational.

Pytanie o miejsce i rolę papieża w Kościele katolickim bardzo wyraźnie pojawia się w myśli teologicznej kard. G.L. Müllera (ur. 1947). Niemiecki hierarcha, podejmując refleksję nad tym zagadnieniem, czyni to w sposób uporządkowany i systematyczny, łącząc wątki dogmatyczne ze spojrzeniem fundamentalnoteologicznym. Papiestwo, zdaniem G.L. Müllera, jest faktem historycznym, który posiada swoje źródło w tajemnicy Objawienia. Podejmując refleksję nad tym zagadnieniem, obecnym w myśli teologa, autor odwołuje się do jego kluczowych tekstów, przede wszystkim do pracy Der Papst. Sendung und Auftrag opublikowanej w roku 2017, a także do wypowiedzi zawartych w tomie rozmów, jakie z kardynałem przeprowadził red. Paweł Lisicki. W prezentowanym artykule autor ukazuje najpierw interpretację klasycznych tekstów prymacjalnych, proponowaną przez kard. Müllera. Następnie omawia najwcześniejsze świadectwa Tradycji, do których odwołuje się niemiecki teolog. W końcu zwraca uwagę na misję, jaka wypływa z papieskiego urzędu. W zakończeniu wyciąga wnioski w perspektywie eklezjologii fundamentalnej.
The question about the place and the role of the pope in the Catholic Church appears very clearly in the theological thought of the cardinal G.L. Müller (born in 1947). The German hierarch, when reflecting on this issue, does so in an orderly and systematic way, combining dog-matic themes with a fundamental theological perspective. Papacy, according to G.L. Müller is a historical fact that has its source in the mystery of Revelation. Reflecting on this issue, present in the thought of the theologian, the author refers to his key texts, primarily to the work Der Papst. Sendung und Auftrag published in 2017, as well as to the statements included in the volume of conversations with the cardinal, carried out by Paweł Lisicki. In the presented article, the author first presents the interpretation of the classic texts about primacy proposed by cardinal Müller. Then, he discusses the earliest testimonies of Tradition, which the German theologian refers to. Next, he draws attention to the mission of the papal office. Finally, he draws conclusions from the perspective of the fundamental ecclesiology.

This article presents question of structural credibility of the Church based on ecclesiological thought of rev. Marian Rusecki, professor of fundamental theology and the founder of Fundamental Theology School of Lublin. Though Rusecki did not work out fully comprehensive fundamental ecclesiology, he in his researches investigate many issues connected with credibility of Church. First of all Rusecki pointed to the divine-human structure of Church. He motivates this structure in reference to the paschal ecclesiogenesis, which in turn indicates on essence of the Church – the communicaton of Revelation and the salvation in time and space. Rusecki introduced theological conceptions of Church: salvation-historical, semeiotical, personalistic. They serve to show realization Church's essence in temporary, spatial and deep (from below) dimensions. These dimensions and these conceptions of the Church are connected each other and indicate that the Church is credible and true. Salvation-historical conception presents Church as herald of Revelation in temporal dimension. This article shows temporary frames of Church and its permanent identity and continuity in time from creation to the end of time. Attention was turned on Tradition, Magisterium Ecclesiae and permanent ecclesiogenesis which make possible communication of Revelation by the Church in time. Semiotical conception of the Church refers to spatial dimension and shows Church as salvific community, as sign of Christ, and sign of salvation. It has two breadths – Church membership and relationship to the Church. In deep (from below) dimension, based on of personalistic conception, the Church is shown as the environment in which the man can fulfill his orientation towards transcendence and fully realize his personal existence in Jesus Christ and His Church. Church as witness of Revelation and Christ leads a man to conversion and to faith, and include him in the sacramental sign of the Church. Church has transformative influence on man and on the various dimensions of his life. But members of the Church in their live are witness of Jesus Christ and the Church too. This part of article presents also axiological argumentation for credibility of the Church. These dimensions of Church portray fulfillment Church's essence and realization of its mission, thereby structural credibility of Church becomes justify. Article pays attention also on conditions of the cognizance of the structural credibility of the Church.

Academic research in the field of ecclesiology has been conducted at John Paul II Catholic University of Lublin (CUL) from the beginning of its existence, among others, in the Department of Fundamental Theology headed in 1918 by Rev. Piotr Kremer. Research intensified after the creation of the second Department of Fundamental Theology—Ecclesiology (on  June 23, 1958), which in the years 1964–91 was headed by Rev. Stanisław Nagy (Cardinal since 2003). Along with this, the Lublin School of Fundamental Theology developed, whose most prominent contributor was Rev. Marian Rusecki. The aim of this article is to present the achievements of the Lublin center (authors, works, research problems, its development) in the field of ecclesiology. The article will not repeat the contents of other articles included in this volume[1] but will be composed of the following sections: (1) the ecclesiological contents before the establishment of the Lublin School of Fundamental Theology, (2) the ecclesiological contents in the works of Rev. Edward Kopeć, (3) the ecclesiological achievements of Rev. Stanisław Nagy and his students, (4) the ecclesiological achievements of Rev. Marian Rusecki and his students, and (5) a conclusion.   [1] Especially those written by Rev. Jacenty Mastej, Rev. Marek Żmudziński, Rev. Paweł Borto and Rev. Krzysztof Kaucha.

Opis:
There are two purposes of this article: the first one - to clarify the meaning of the term ‘credibility of the Church in contemporary Poland’ from a theological perspective, and the second one - to describe the basic signs of such credibility and the difficulties they are facing. The article consists of three parts and a conclusion. The first part deals with the theological understanding of the Church’s credibility in contemporary Poland in the light of new researches and inspirations offered by Joseph Ratzinger’s ecclesiology and by the book Oblicza Kościoła katolickiego w Polsce. 1050. rocznicaChrztu [Features of the Catholic Church in Poland. The 1050th Anniversary of the Christening] (ed. by J. Mastej, K. Kaucha, P. Borto, Lublin 2016). The second part is focused on the signs of the Church’s credibility in Poland (sign of Peter, of the Apostolic Collegium, of unity, of holiness, of universality, of apostolicity, agapetological, praxeological, martyriological, and culture-creative), which started to be described about 25 years ago by Rev. Marian Rusecki, who was co-founder and the most excellent representative of the Lublin School of Fundamental Theology. The third part presents some new signs of the Church’s credibility in Poland according to the author of the article (charitable, staurological, resurrectional, paschal, anthropological-vocational, of freedom, of the priority of the Spirit and spiritual life, of peace and reconciliation, of protest, of the faith’s pure- ness). In the conclusion the author underlines the values of the semeiological method in describing and testing the credibility of the Church in contemporary Poland.

Fundamental theology as a discipline and academic center conducting research as well as didactic and organizational activity has existed at the John Paul II Catholic University of Lublin since its beginning, first as the Department of Fundamental Theology (1918–20), then the Section of Fundamental Theology (1920–99), and since 1999 as the Institute of Fundamental Theology. As it developed, the center began to take the form of a scientific school, the Lublin School of Fundamental Theology. Its foundations were laid by Rev. Edward Kopeć. Subsequently, it was developed by, among others, Rev. Stanisław Nagy, Rev. Romuald Łukaszyk, Rev. Henryk Zimoń (religious scholar), and especially by Rev. Marian Rusecki (a student of Rev. E. Kopeć), the main co-founder of the school and its most prolific author, whose scientific achievements are the department’s showcase and have influenced contemporary Polish fundamental theology. During his time, especially at the beginning of the 21st century, the school reported its greatest scientific and organizational achievements. Currently, it is continually being developed by Rev. M. Rusecki’s students who work at the Institute of Fundamental Theology and its graduates working in other centers. This article presents the scientific characteristics (historical outline, features and main trends) of the Lublin School of Fundamental Theology (Section 1) and its most important achievements (Section 2): the main publications, organizational achievements as well as national and international cooperation.

Celem niniejszego artykułu jest przedstawienie dorobku (autorów, dzieł, zagadnień, przemian) lubelskiego ośrodka teologii fundamentalnej w zakresie eklezjologii. Artykuł składa się z następujących punktów: treści eklezjologiczne przed zainicjowaniem lubelskiej szkoły teologii fundamentalnej (1), treści eklezjologiczne w twórczości ks. Edwarda Kopcia (2), eklezjologiczny dorobek ks. Stanisława Nagyego i jego uczniów (3), eklezjologiczny dorobek ks. Mariana Ruseckiego i jego uczniów (4) oraz zakończenia. W podsumowaniu stwierdzono, że w badaniach w zakresie eklezjologii zachodziły przemiany analogiczne do przemian w europejskiej eklezjologii katolickiej na przestrzeni ostatnich stu lat. Najpierw była to eklezjologia dogmatyczno-apologetyczna i polemiczna z prawosławiem rosyjskim (ks. P. Kremer), potem – u ks. E. Kopcia i ks. S. Nagyego – tradycyjna, utrzymana jeszcze w duchu apologetyki intelektualistycznej. W późniejszym okresie ks. Nagy przekształcał ją w eklezjologię posoborową o coraz wyraźniejszym profilu teologicznym i ekumenicznym, co czynił też ks. R. Łukaszyk. Największy wkład wniósł ks. M. Rusecki, który synchronizował eklezjologię z chrystologią (u ks. Kopcia i ks. Nagyego były one niezależne) i poszerzył argumentację na rzecz wiarygodności Kościoła. Jego dorobek jest rozwijany przez jego uczniów.

Teologia fundamentalna, jako dyscyplina i ośrodek akademicki prowadzący działalność naukowo-badawczą, dydaktyczną i organizacyjną, istnieje w KUL od jego początku, najpierw jako Katedra Teologii Fundamentalnej (1918-20), potem Sekcja Teologii Fundamentalnej (1920-99), a od 1999 Instytut Teologii Fundamentalnej. W trakcie rozwoju ośrodek ten zaczął przybierać kształt szkoły naukowej – lubelskiej szkoły teologii fundamentalnej. Jej podwaliny położył ks. Edward Kopeć. Potem rozwijali ją m.in. ks. Stanisław Nagy, ks. Romuald Łukaszyk, religioznawca ks. Henryk Zimoń, a zwłaszcza ks. Marian Rusecki (uczeń ks. Kopcia) – główny współtwórca szkoły i jej najpłodniejszy autor, którego naukowe dokonania są wizytówką szkoły i oddziałują na współczesną polską teologię fundamentalną. Za jego czasów, zwłaszcza od początku XXI w., szkoła odnotowała najwięcej najbardziej znaczących dokonań naukowych i organizacyjnych. Aktualnie starają się ją rozwijać uczniowie ks. Ruseckiego pracujący w Instytucie Teologii Fundamentalnej KUL, a także jej absolwenci pracujący w innych ośrodkach. W niniejszym artykule została przedstawiona naukowa charakterystyka (rys historyczny, cechy i główne nurty badawcze) lubelskiej szkoły teologii fundamentalnej (punkt 1) oraz jej najważniejsze osiągnięcia (punkt 2): główne publikacje, osiągnięcia organizacyjne oraz współpraca krajowa i międzynarodowa. W setną rocznicę istnienia Katolickiego Uniwersytetu Lubelskiego Jana Pawła II wpisuje się działalność Katedry Teologii Fundamentalnej (od 1918 r.), następnie Sekcji Teologii Fundamentalnej, a od 1999 r. Instytutu Teologii Fundamentalnej. Celem artykułu jest ukazanie przemian, jakie zaszły w strukturze ITF oraz prezentacja osób, które przyczyniły się do jego rozwoju. The activity of the Department of Fundamental Theology (from 1918), then the Section of Fundamental Theology, and from 1999 the Institute of Fundamental Theology (IFT) shares the 100th anniversary of the existence of John Paul II Catholic University of Lublin. The aim of the article is to present the evolution of the IFT structure and the people who contributed to its development.

Artykuł porusza zagadnienie metodologii badań eklezjologii fundamentalnej. Autor zwraca uwagę na wartość i potrzebę uaktualnienia metody via ascendens, zwłaszcza jej odmiany, która bada przejawy życia Kościoła. Na przykładzie Ameryki Łacińskiej opisuje pięć wybranych aspektów życia Kościoła od wewnątrz: ekumenizm, stosunek do religii niechrześcijańskich, obojętnych religijnie i do ateizmu oraz do życia społecznego i kultur. Za pomocą narzędzia heurystyczne SWOT omawia ich przykładowe mocne i słabe strony, możliwości i zagrożenia. W ostatniej części, uwzględniając doświadczenie Kościoła w Ameryce Łacińskiej, sygnalizuje potrzebę poszerzenia przedmiotu teologii fundamentalnej o niespełnione oczekiwania tych, którzy pozostawiają Kościół; podkreśla znaczenie wykonywania misji jako źródło i cel badań teologicznych; zwraca uwagę na rangę w teologii kwestii nurtujących różne grupy społeczne.
The article discusses the issue of research methodology in the field of fundamental ecclesiology. The author draws attention to the importance and need to update the via ascendens method, especially its variants, which examine aspects of the life of the Church. Taking Latin America as an example, he analyses five selected aspect of the Church’s life from within in relation to ecumenism and non-Christian religions, to religiously indifferent and atheism, and in relation to issues concerning social life and culture. By using SWOT heuristic tools, he discusses their exemplary strong and weak aspects, including opportunities and threats. In the last part, taking into account the Latin American ecclesial experience, the author, first, indicates the need to broaden the subject of fundamental theology concerning the problem of the unfulfilled expectations of those who leave the Church. Next, he stresses the importance of carrying out the mission as the source and purpose of theological research. Finally, he draws attention to the fact, that there are important questions in theology, which concern different social groups.

The purpose of this article is to show cognitive value of the iconography of the Cross for fundamental theology and process of justification of credibility of this redemptive and salvific Event. Authors of article focuses on main motifs and themes of the staurological iconography and classify them in three groups: representations of the Trinity on the Cross (Throne of Grace), ecclesiological elements in representations of the Cross (connected with institution of the Eucharist and New Covenant, and establishing new people of God), and christological implications. Article indicates theological contents of each of that iconographical groups and shows that all of them make a contribution to understanding the reality of paschal mystery and the realm of the Church, help to reflect on the history of salvation, make it easy the contemplation of the mystery of the Cross. Iconography of resurrection of Cross has a sign structure and therefore it contains content of faith, and affects both the aesthetic and intellectual spheres of man. In this way the iconography of the Cross has cognitive functions and to some extent contributes to portraying the credibility of the Cross, Jesus Christ and the Church.

The topic about ‘The Problem of God’ (die Gottesfrage) is one of the most important discussions for contemporary dogmatic theology and theology in general. The thought of Walter Kasper, who this year is celebrating his 90th birthday, is characterised by a creative and open-minded approach to contemporary challenges. This article analyzes Kasper’s reflection on ‘The Problem of God’ based on three monographs of the German cardinal: ‘Jesus der Christius’, ‘Der Gott Jesus Christi’ and ‘Katholische Kirche. Wesen – Wirklichkeit – Sendung’. The first part of the article presents selected topics of Kasperʼs Christology. The next part analyzes the causes of the current crisis of faith in God and the solutions proposed by the German theologian as a response to modern atheism. In the last part, the subject of reflection is the Church, which, according to Kasper, is to effectively make present in history the salvific work of Jesus Christ and be an icon of the Holy Trinity.

Małe wspólnoty stały się masową formą życia chrześcijańskiego w katolicyzmie i w innych wyznaniach chrześcijańskich. Wychodząc od tak powszechnego zjawiska, autor analizuje wybrane aspekty urzeczywistniania się Kościoła na przykładzie doświadczenia brazylijskich wspólnot podstawowych (Comunidades Eclesiais de Base – CEBs). Zagadnienie rozwija w dwóch częściach. W pierwszej omawia ich genezę, w drugiej – przejawy życia CEBs jako formy stawania się Kościoła na poziomie pierwotnych grup społecznych.
Small communities are now a common phenomenon in Catholicism and other Christian denominations. Bearing this fact in mind, the author asks about their ecclesial nature on the example of the experience of Brazilian Basic Ecclesial Communities (Comunidades Eclesiais de Base − CEBs). We assume that the verification of the ecclesiality of these communities can be done by analyzing their genesis and development (part one) and the manifestations of their existence (part two). In the article we quote selected data from the history and life of the CEBs, which confirm that they are a phenomenon developing within the Church and in the communion with her. Through the CEBs, the Church is making herself realized and existentially visible, especially in environments that are responsive to the community dimension and the need to strengthen faith in conjunction with real personal, family and social challenges.

The systematic theology of the 20th and 21st centuries has experienced revolutionary changes. The tremendous effort of theologians – which was already evident on the eve of Vatican II to experience order and confirmation during its deliberations – is still bearing fruit today. It seems that interpretations of the Council’s teaching have now become more problematic than the doctrine of Vatican II itself. One of the great figures of the theological world is Prof. Stanislaw Nagy, whose create efforts were honoured with a cardinalate, and to whom we are all indebted. Indeed, it is worth discovering his difficult path from the pre-council rigorous spiritual and intellectual formation to formal apologetics, thus paving the way for fundamental theology in Poland during the Communist period, to the ecumenical commitment of the times of freedom. In this respect, it is not without reason to speak of his ecumenical vision of the Church.
