Opis:
The problem of desertion in the army of the Grand Duchy of Warsaw was extremely essential due to its size, reaching ca. 14% of the number of the army. Various steps were taken. The least effective were the legal acts against society and civil administration. This followed basically from the fact that the acts were not clear, and there were no executive regulations. The principal role in diminishing this plague was played by several amnesties. The Prince of Warsaw, Frederick August, signed also a convention with Alexander I, the tsar of Russia, of mutual extradition of refugees. The basic role, however, was played by military jurisdiction established in 1808, the military penal code, and the implementation of those regulations.

Opis:
The author sets forth questions about the essence of consumption, the role of the market, and protest movements, while leaving aside overused arguments about the negative impact of consumption on civilization as a whole. She presents the most important critical understandings of consumer culture, and in particular, their strategies for resisting the dominant capitalist system. She argues that certain widely promulgated attempts at deconstruction, which are based on a ‘hegemonic’ consumer world view and announce the need to desert the market, are fairly outworn and conceptually problematic. In their place, she suggests forms of engaged participation in the market, linking consumerism with conscious, creative sufficiency and efficiency of action. Consumerism thus understood could strengthen individual freedom and broaden the extent of democratic liberties. As an accepted social logic, it could favour the creation of social ties and engagement in social life; its symbolic potential could be greater-on the principle that only engagement, rather than desertion, provides a true opportunity to influence conditions.

Opis:
The problem of desertion in the policy of the Confederate States of America (1861-1865)In this article I intend to focus on the presentation of how desertion was perceived in those times, and in particular, to trace the policies of the Confederacy relating to the growing number of desertions. During the Civil War in America, a soldier who walked away from his own unit without permission and intention to return was regarded as a deserter. On the other hand, the status of soldiers was enjoyed by all officers and soldiers who received a soldier’s pay or were duly enlisted in the service of the Confederate States. From the middle of 1862, efforts were made to solve the problem of desertion from the Confederate Army. Either amnesties were introduced or deserters were threatened with possible use of severe penalties. The policy on desertion was influenced to the greatest extent by: the CSA President Jefferson Davis, General Robert E. Lee, Secretary of War James A. Seddon and the Head of the Conscription Bureau, Brigadier General John S. Preston. The southern authorities’ policy with respect to the problem of desertion was chaotic and inefficient. According to various estimates, during the war, at least one fourth of all Confederate soldiers deserted from the army
