NA MELODIACH PIEŚNI KOLĘDOWYCH OSNUTE CHARAKTERYSTYKA PRELUDIÓW ORGANOWYCH MIECZYSŁAWA SURZYŃSKIEGO OP. 42 Characteristics of organ preludes based on the melodies of carol songs op. 42 by Mieczysław Surzyński
Two main groups of pieces can be distinguished in Mieczysław Surzyński's work. The compositions belonging to the first on are inspired by religious music, especially Polish church song. Surzyński had written them under the influence of the Cecilian Movement. The prevailing pieces are songs, preludes, improvisations. The second group consists of works entirely derived from the composer's creativity. The subject of this article will be the musical analysis of the preludes from the second volume of The Year in a church song op. 42, entitled Based on the melodies of carol songs. It contains, among others, 12 organ preludes by Mieczysław Surzyński. The described organ preludes of M. Surzyński are an example of literature related to the Cecilian Movement. This is evidenced by the use of all elements of the musical work in such a way as to emphasize the melody of cantus firmus. These compositions are not long and difficult, which increases the number of potential performers. Surzyński repeatedly presents carol melodies, which could lead to boring repetition of the same content. However, each time he does it in a different, original way. Thanks to this, the organ preludes seem interesting but also extremely familiar.
