This article covers seventeen Polish arboreta, of which six belong to academic institutions, seven to
the State Forestry Commission, three to local authorities and one is private. Seven are park arboreta, normally
surrounding palaces or manor houses, however ten were set up in woodland, near forests, or on the sites of former
forest nurseries. The article discusses the establishing of new arboreta, both in parks and woodland, issues regarding
design, maintenance and the protection of collections as well as educational and popularisation. Particular emphasis
is placed on the suitable choice of plants, maintenance both of appropriate records and long term observations and
measurements as the basis for future academic work.
