Problem krzyży powypadkowych w Gdańsku

Celem artykułu jest zwrócenie uwagi na współczesne, wielopłaszczyznowe zjawisko stawiania krzyży, zwanych krzyżami pamięci lub powypadkowymi, w miejscu śmiertelnego wypadku drogowego poprzez ukazanie postrzegania tego fenomenu przez kilkutysięczną grupę, która odpowiedziała na ankietę zamieszczoną w Internecie. We wprowadzeniu ukazano zarys problematyki spontanicznych miejsc upamiętnień w zagranicznej literaturze przedmiotu. Następnie umieszczono spolaryzowane wyniki ankiety internetowej przeprowadzonej w listopadzie 2011 roku na zlecenie Urzędu Miasta w Gdańsku wśród użytkowników portalu Trójmiasto.pl, którzy odpowiadali na pytanie: Czy krzyże pamięci w pasie drogowym należy usuwać? Po zwięzłej, „ilościowej” ocenie problemu krzyży pamięci w przestrzeni publicznej (52% odpowiedzi, że nie należy ich usuwać oraz 48%, że trzeba) w dalszej części opracowania przedstawiono przykłady swobodnych komentarzy, pogrupowanych według trzech kategorii. Z wielowątkowej dyskusji internautów na temat krzyży powypadkowych wyodrębniono wątek przestrzenny, ideologiczny i kulturowy. Po koniec opracowania zamieszczono pomysły internatów rozwiązania problemu krzyży powypadkowych, jakie znalazły się w wypowiedziach użytkowników regionalnego portalu.

Wayside crosses are common in many Christian countries. The aim of the paper is to draw attention to „new crosses”, called memorial or after-accident crosses, erected as in the past by roads but nowadays associated only with sad events because they express pain after the beloved lost in accidents. Firstly, the selected foreign literature have been presented which deal with interpretation of spontaneous roadside memorials. The other part of the article is focused on polarized opinions of the portal Trójmiasto.pl users who took part in Internet survey. The paper can be also considered as an example of the social conflict on religious symbol and the democratic approach to the issue at the beginning of the 21st century. Municipal authorities decided by the means of Internet survey check the opinions and the mood of the public before they take a decision whether to remove crosses from surrounding areas of traffic lanes in Gdansk. There were as many as 3790 votes collected during about a week in November 2011. The opinions on after-accident crosses were nearly equally divided: 52% votes in favour of the crosses and 48% votes against the crosses. Most people (44%) chose the answer that they are a good warning sign for drivers. Apart from the quantitive brief estimation of the problem of the crosses in public space one can read 614 comments of Internet users on this issue sometimes changing into a multithreaded discussion with three main themes called in the paper spacious, ideological and cultural. Some people compare such crosses to illegal advertisement, eyesore, improper religious symbol in public space. The other group argue that they are the best sign of accident prevention, a part of good tradition and even the citizens` right to express bereavement if somebody feels this. At the end of the paper there are some Internet users` ideas on dissolving problem of memorial crosses. They differ according to those three main interpretations. Unfortunately, there is no consensus on the matter of memorial crosses in Gdańsk.
