Spotkanie sacrum i profanum w przestrzeni cerkwi św. Jerzego we wsi Złatolist w Bułgarii

In my work I analyse the meeting of the sacred and profane categories in three of its various forms: the cult of Reverend (baba) Stoyna; sacred space and rite of the church; and iconography. The orthodox church of St. George in the village of Zlatolist is located near the Melnik, the smallest town in Bulgaria. Zlatolist lies in the district of Sandanski in southwestern Bulgaria, on the border with Greece and Northern Macedonia. The population of the village is approximately 10 people, however, during the holidays thousands of pilgrims come here to visit the church of Saint George. For several decades, this was where prophetess Reverend (baba) Stoyna lived and received the faithful. The above-mentioned categories of sacred and profane, interpenetrating on many levels, serve me in the analysis of this church, where, like in the microcosm, a spectrum of various “meetings” of values developed based on the Orthodox faith in Bulgaria and Bulgarian folk culture.
