Serbian Orthodox church-national councils in the first half of the eighteenth century, although formally not yet standardized, played an important adversarial role and were the place of talks about the key problems of the Serbian Orthodox Church and the nation under Austrian rule. Repeatedly discussed topics – the privileges, the organization of the Orthodox Church, the distribution of dioceses, the freedom of archbishops’ decisions not only in spiritual matters – and their effect as numerous missions to Viennese court, testify to the importance of this institution for the maintenance of autonomy, guaranteed by imperial privileges, and ultimately building the future independence of Serbia.
