The paper relates to the concept of the Polish federalist thought, which has its longstanding history. In the aftermath of the World War II a discussion on the shape and future of post-war Europe was revitalized. In October 1949 on the convent in Paris there was founded The Association of Polish Federalists – an organization gathering the Poles all over the country in order to represent Polish federalism in international relations throughout the membership in The European Union of Federalists. Firstly established in Paris, then developed in London, it finally worked in the United States, particularly in New York and Chicago. The aim of newly established association was to group all Polish federalists, regardless of their political viewpoints and represent the idea of Polish federalism in international scene. The postulated intrinsic concept was not a one-step federalism based on individual membership but rather a gathering of relatively weak nations in regional associations in the framework of European federation, what would allow to maintain a balanced order of powers. So that the most fundamental rule of Polish federalism was its gradual character.
