After Poland regained independence, many Polish citizens were deprived of insurance protection from the plants, which for many years paid premiums for the purchased policies. In the new reality, many insurers ceased their activities on the territory of the Polish state, abandoning their clients without due compensation for the costs incurred. The Polish government tried to persuade the aut- horities of states in which these insurance companies had their headquarters to settle accounts with Polish citizens and pay them compensation for broken contracts. These were difficult negotiations, and among the countries that are least willing to make settlements, the German state should be mentioned first.
