The chapter Dimdim i yakidasi. The Trobriandian Experience in Sex, betel and magic by Aleksandra Gumowska by Jan Miklas-Frankowski attempts to analyse Anna Gumowska’s reportage book Sex, betel and magic—including the category of the experience of the Other. In 2012, Gumowska travelled to Trobriand Islands—one of the outermost regions inhabited by humans and at the same time the most known part of Antipodes, thanks to the canonical explorations and books of Bronislaw Malinowski. On the one hand, Sex, betel and magic follows the footsteps of the father of the modern anthropology and answers whether Malinowski’s pessimistic prognosis was fulfilled, yet, on the other hand, the book attempts to describe the experience of the contemporary islanders’ community. The author of this empathic anthropological reportage, thanks to her perceptive and sensitive participation, convinces her reader that she indeed speaks from “the position of the Other”.
