Wpływ wybranych składników uzdatnianej wody na skuteczność jej odmanganiania w obecności mas aktywnych Influence of the selected components of treated water on the effectiveness of manganese removal in the presence of the active masses
This paper presents the results of research the process of manganese removal from water involving five selected active masses, different in physical and chemical structure. Attempt was made to determine the effect of selected factors (humic acids and iron concentration, pH level) on the efficiency of manganese removal from water in the presence of the active masses. The studies clearly showed that the efficiency of the process of manganese removal from water in the presence of active masses depends inter alia on quality parameters of the treated water. Depending on the presence of other constituents in water, removal of manganese from water may be more or less effective. The results showed that humic acids have a negative impact on the removal of manganese from water in the presence of each of the examined active masses. A very important factor in the process of manganese removal from water was its pH. In the water containing no humic acids removal efficiency of manganese in the presence of examined active masses increased with increasing pH. In particular, manganese removal of water characterized by typical groundwater pH (pH 7) proceeded most efficiently in the presence of masses G-1 and Purolite MZ-10. On the opposite other examined active masses (Birm, Hydrocleanit, Defeman) showed a low effectiveness at neutral pH. The biggest impact of pH of water on the effectiveness of manganese removal was noticed for Birm mass. Results of this part of of the showed that the negative effect of pH on the effectiveness of manganese removal from water containing humic acids (recorded for the masses Purolite MZ-10, G-1 and Birm) may have resulted from the chemical structure of humic acids and their solubility, which increased with increasing pH of water. Effect of the presence of iron in the water on the effectiveness of removal of manganese is not so clear. The negative impact of the presence of iron occurs when in the treated water it is present in dissolved form (divalent ions). Then oxidation of manganese ions takes place only afer the oxidation of iron ions. Presented results of studies the process of manganese removal in the presence of active masses clearly indicate the need of continuation and verification under dynamic conditions.
