Stanisław Witkiewicz discovered Cyprian Norwid and his thoughts on art and human imperfections–particularly with regard to Polish souls, thoughts typical of his epoch–twenty years after the latter’s death. While Witkiewicz was thirty years Norwid’s junior, an examination of the authors’ letters and the in-depth analysis of the stylistic similarities they share, reveal striking analogies between Norwid’s and Wikiewicz’s ideas. Each considered one’s life and work as an artist to be a very serious task (Witkiewicz saw this especially in the case of his son, Stanisław Ignacy, whom he had raised to become an artist from the cradle); they both solemnly demanded maturity and a responsible attitude toward work, truth, and the time one has at one’s disposal. Witkiewicz, contrary to Norwid, however, believed that one should find the strength for the spiritual fight inside oneself. He dismissed the truths of the Gospels, despite calling them ‘a good book’, and would neither consider them a source of guidelines for life nor the goal of human life itself.
