The Warsaw Rokosz Convention in October 1607After the defeat of the Zebrzydowski rokosz (rebellion) at the battle of Guzów (6 July 1607) the supporters of the rokosz inaugurated a two-course activity. Already on 11 July the marshal of the rebellion, Janusz Radziwiłł, the deputy cup-bearer of Lithuania, in a proclamation issued in Lublin summoned to a convention to be held on 5 August for the purpose of electing a new monarch. On the other hand, Mikołaj Zebrzydowski, the voivode of Cracow, simultaneously initiated correspondence with assorted senators in an attempt at urging them to mediate between him and the dethroned Sigismund III. Since no one arrived at the election convention, the voivode of Cracow announced in a proclamation of 27 August 1607, formally signed by Piotr Ostrowski and Jan Wolski, a rokosz convention to take place near Warsaw on 16 September 1607. The exact date of this event and the site of its debates were unknown. The correspondence kept at the Berlin Dahlem archive makes it possible to determine that the convention occurred in the village of Kamień near Warsaw on 16–19 October 1607. According to the premises conceived by M. Zebrzydowski it was supposed to exert pressure on the monarch, urged to sign a pact favourable for supporters of the rokosz. In view of the fact that the debates were attended by a small number of the gentry, the participants of the rokosz readily accepted the mediation proposed by a council of bishops debating in Piotrków; four days later they dissolved the convention and entrusted the voivode of Cracow with conducting further negotiations with the king through the bishops. This was the last convention of the rokosz, although M. Zebrzydowski attempted, albeit unsuccessfully, to mobilise his adherents. Naturally, the Warsaw convention was not an attempt at electing a new monarch, but became the onset of months-long negotiations with the rebellions concerning a settlement with the monarch on conditions as honourable as possible.
