One reminds of the details concerning the discovery of trichinellosis by Zenker in 1860. After that a period of serious epidemics followed which caused panic everywhere. In course of time, however, the publiic opinion and even that of the sanitary authorities calmed down, partiailly due to the trust in the efficacy of trichinoscopy. Despite of numerous investigations on trichinellosis (over 2500 publications) and doubtless progresses in the prophylaxis the situation after 100 years did not much improve, at least in some countries. It 'is only since 25 years that more interest is shown in the problem of trichinellosis. One discovers the disease even there where it never had been recorded. Epidemics with a large extent (500 patients and more) happen frequently as well as lethal cases in families infected with the parasite. In spite of that, many cases still remain undiagnosed. One appeals to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the discovery of trichinellosis not only under the historical aspect but also as a symbol and indication to the unfavourable situation in many countries. One should propagandize investigations on a large scale, because we are still far even from knowing the actual frequency in occurrence of the parasite in the world. Perhaps the international conference to be held in Warsaw (12th and 13 th September, 1960) will be the turning point in starting an international co-operation in this field.
